Smile ITV's "Broadchurch" (Season 3 Premieres 2017)

BBC America’s award-winning co-production Broadchurch returns Wednesday, March 4 at 10pm ET.

About Season 2

BBC America’s award-winning co-production Broadchurch returns Wednesday, March 4 at 10pm ET.

Academy Award nominee Marianne Jean-Baptiste and legendary actress Charlotte Rampling star alongside three-time BAFTA-winner Olivia Colman and Emmy-winner David Tennant in the Peabody Award-winning drama.

The shocking murder of 11-year-old Daniel Latimer rocked the quiet seaside town of Broadchurch, as everyone in the tight-knit community suddenly became a suspect. After a tumultuous investigation, a killer was finally named.

Now, Broadchurch is still reeling and the case of young Danny Latimer is far from over. The new season of Broadchurch follows two seemingly unconnected events: the trial of Joe Miller (the man charged for Danny’s murder) and the Sandbrook case – Alec Hardy’s previously failed investigation, which has dogged his existence ever since.

Though all expect a swift sentencing, Joe Miller’s hearing quickly escalates into a full-trial, proving there are undeniable discrepancies and still more secrets hidden among the townspeople. At the same time, Hardy’s past comes back to haunt him when his primary suspect in the Sandbrook homicide resurfaces, looking for the woman who testified against him—his wife, Claire. What unfolds is a series of twists and turns as the Sandbrook case bursts back open, unraveling Hardy’s past and bringing shocking truths from both cases to the surface.

In season one, Detective Inspector Alec Hardy (David Tennant) – still haunted by the collapse of his previous murder case – was put in charge of the Latimer investigation, much to the chagrin of local officer Detective Sergeant Ellie Miller (Olivia Colman). Strong yet compassionate, Ellie was forced to put her personal connections to the victim aside to help solve the case that devastated the close-knit community. As the detectives scraped for evidence and fought to narrow the suspects, the town was turned upside down.

The investigation saw many townspeople come under suspicion, including Danny’s father Mark (Andrew Buchan). But after many twists and turns, the revelation of the killer’s identity had far-reaching consequences for Hardy and Ellie. In the season one finale, Joe Miller (Matthew Gravelle), Ellie’s husband, was found responsible for the unspeakable crime – leaving the entire town, especially Ellie, shell-shocked.

Season two begins on the day of Joe Miller’s hearing. All of Broadchurch awaits his sentencing— eager to gain some sense of closure from the nightmare of Danny’s murder. But to everyone’s disbelief (including his barrister’s) Joe enters an astonishing plea – ‘not guilty.’ Joe fixedly avers that nobody is innocent and promises to expose more secrets of the town’s residents. He goes on to enlist a fearsome defense team led by Queen’s Counsel (QC) Sharon Bishop (Marianne Jean-Baptiste) and junior barrister Abby Thompson (Phoebe Waller-Bridge).

Now bracing themselves for a full trial, Danny’s parents, Beth (Jodie Whittaker) and Mark desperately seek legal representation from esteemed local QC barrister Jocelyn Knight (Charlotte Rampling). At first she refuses to take on their case, but will she have a change of heart when she learns that former pupil Sharon Bishop is representing the defense?

Hardy, no longer on active duty as detective, remains in Broadchurch – but why? With his health condition worsening, he desperately needs Ellie’s help to make things right with a previously failed investigation. As Hardy’s past comes back to haunt him, the two detectives (Hardy and Ellie) are forced back together.

Following Joe’s arrest, Ellie is left broken and alone. She’s left Broadchurch to serve as a traffic officer in Devon and her son (Tom) refuses to live with her. There won’t be a light at the end of the tunnel for Ellie until Joe is brought to justice – only then can she even begin to find a sense of normalcy again. For now, she finds solace and some fleeting sense of purpose in helping Hardy. One thing is for certain, as the hearing of Joe Miller unfolds and Hardy’s past bubbles to the surface – nothing will stay hidden in Broadchurch.

Broadchurch is executive produced by Chris Chibnall (Law & Order: UK, Life on Mars) for Imaginary Friends and Jane Featherstone (The Hour, Spooks) on behalf of Kudos, a Shine Group company. The Producer is Richard Stokes (Silk, Law & Order: UK) who also produced the first season. James Strong (Downton Abbey, Doctor Who) who directed five episodes of the first season, directed episodes one and two of the new season.

Lightbulb Broadchurch Season 2 In The USA: Meet The Characters

Broadchurch Season 2

Broadchurch Season 2 In The USA: Meet The Characters

On 4 March the second season of Broadchurch will premiere on BBC America.

Detective Sergeant Ellie Miller is still reeling from the revelation that 11-year old Danny Latimer was murdered by her husband, Joe. As the residents of the sea-side town deal with the aftermath of Danny’s murder and Joe’s arrest, Detective Inspector Alec Hardy is haunted by an old investigation when a witness from an unsolved murder case comes asking for help.

To get you ready for your return to Broadchurch, here's a quick run down of the characters you'll be spending the next 8 weeks with:

Detective Inspector Alec Hardy
(DAVID TENNANT)
An experienced detective, Hardy’s name was tarnished quite publicly when he found himself at the center of a scandal surrounding a major case he was investigating. Having fled big city life for a small-town, Hardy had just arrived in Broadchurch when 11-year-old Danny Latimer was murdered. Hardy knew he was facing another tough case and was determined to get it right this time. It seemed he had until Joe Miller’s hearing quickly escalates into a full trial – re-opening a chapter that all of Broadchurch thought had finally been closed. At the same time, Hardy’s past comes to light, causing new faces and shocking truths to emerge in Broadchurch.

Ellie Miller
(OLIVIA COLMAN)
Ellie, a mother of two, never imagined that her husband would be arrested for the crime she and Hardy had so tirelessly been investigating. Ellie’s life has since fallen apart: the man she once called her husband is now on trial for murder, her son wants nothing to do with her and her closest friend, Beth Latimer, despises her. Beth places much of the blame of Danny’s death on Ellie’s shoulders. Now, Ellie struggles to deal with her new reality. She looks forward to the day when her son, Tom, accepts her back, praying that Joe will soon be convicted – only then can she and Tom begin to move on. When Hardy asks for Ellie to help him put an old case to rest, it presents an opportunity for her to make something right again in the world – a feeling she desperately needs. At the same time, Hardy’s past introduces Ellie to someone who might just understand her pain.

Beth Latimer
(JODIE WHITTAKER)
Beth faced every parent’s worst nightmare when her 11-year-old son Danny was found murdered. With an emotionally distant husband (Mark) and a distraught rebellious teenage daughter (Chloe), Beth struggled to lead her family through the horrific tragedy as all their secrets were laid bare. While hanging on by a thread, Beth learned she was pregnant just as she discovered Mark was having an affair with Becca Fisher, the local hotelier. Now, with a new baby on the way, Beth is determined to see justice for the child she lost before bringing another into the world.

Mark Latimer
(ANDREW BUCHAN)
Mark, the town’s plumber, is popular among the locals, but everyone has their secrets – including him. His affair with Becca Fisher (the local hotelier) was revealed after he was suspected of murdering Danny. Mark’s name was cleared, but his marriage to Beth remains on the rocks. Though they await the arrival of a new baby, Mark struggles to deal with the pain of losing his son and grows ever more distant from Beth in the process.

Chloe Latimer
(CHARLOTTE BEAUMONT)
Chloe is Beth and Mark’s only daughter. Though once rebellious, she had no choice but to grow up quickly following the murder of her younger brother, Danny. And with her father growing increasingly distant, Chloe has become someone for her pregnant mother to lean on.

Joe Miller
(MATTHEW GRAVELLE)
To everyone in Broadchurch, Joe had appeared to be a devoted husband to Ellie and loving father to their two children. But as it turned out, Joe had much to hide, including a secret relationship with Danny Latimer, whom he later confessed he had both loved and murdered.

Tom Miller
(ADAM WILSON)
Tom, Ellie and Joe Miller’s son, was Danny Latimer’s best friend. Following Joe’s arrest for Danny’s murder, Tom refuses to live with Ellie and is now living with relatives.

Sharon Bishop Queen’s Counsel
(MARIANNE JEAN-BAPTISTE)
No-nonsense barrister Sharon Bishop doesn’t take on a case she doesn’t believe she can win, and Joe Miller is her newest project. But this case might find Sharon on the opposing side to her former mentor, esteemed barrister Jocelyn Knight. The two have a history together – one not without tensions and fractures…with a possible vendetta developing along the way as a result. Beyond the case, what effect will the trial have on Sharon’s personal life?

Abbie Thompson
(PHOEBE WALLER-BRIDGE)
Junior barrister Abbie Thompson gets a huge shock as Joe enters his plea. Abbie urges her superior, Sharon Bishop, to review the intriguing discrepancies in Joe’s file, eventually convincing Sharon to go out to Broadchurch with her to take on the case.

Jocelyn Knight Queen’s Counsel
(CHARLOTTE RAMPLING)
Though she is a highly esteemed local barrister, Jocelyn has not taken a case in three years. She sympathizes with the Latimer family and is moved by their situation, but adamantly refuses to take up a new case…that is until she learns that her former pupil Sharon Bishop is given Joe’s case.

Claire Ripley
(EVE MYLES)
A key witness in the infamous Sandbrook murder case, Claire is the reason why Alec Hardy came to Broadchurch in the first place. After the case against Claire’s husband (suspected killer Lee Ashworth) falls apart, Hardy promises to protect Claire from the man she betrayed and hides her away in a secluded country house. But when Claire starts receiving strange phone calls, she fears for her safety – worried that her past is coming back to haunt her.

Lee Ashworth
(JAMES D’ARCY)
Lee Ashworth was Alec Hardy’s primary suspect in the disappearance of 19-year-old Lisa Newberry and the murder of her 12-year-old cousin, Pippa. Having left the country after the case against him fell apart, Lee has now resurfaced. He’s intent on reuniting with the wife he once held under his thumb and is determined to keep a very close eye on the man who almost succeeded in putting him away for murder.

Maggie Radcliffe
(CAROLYN PICKLES)
Maggie is a veteran reporter and editor of the Broadchurch Echo. She encourages her staff, especially young reporter Olly Stevens, and holds them to high standards. Years of experience have left Maggie with strong moral convictions, and a need to seek the truth, even at high personal cost.

Olly Stevens
(JONATHAN BAILEY)
Olly, Ellie’s nephew, is an enthusiastic young reporter looking for a ticket out of small town news, which unfortunately comes to him in the form of Danny’s murder. Desperate to write national headlines, Olly was willing to do anything to get his story, and burned a few bridges along the way. Now that his uncle is being tried for murder, Olly is trying to make amends for his mistakes, but the young reporter still has a lot to learn.

Reverend Paul Coates
(ARTHUR DARVILL)
As a local religious leader, Paul does his best to keep his congregation from falling to pieces when tragedy strikes. Part of his job is to provide counseling to all members of his community, but the town might not look too highly on the reverend’s secret prison visits to Joe Miller.

Becca Fisher
(SIMONE MCAULLAY)
Becca, the flirty Australian hotelier, whose dirty laundry of having an affair with Mark Latimer was exposed during the murder investigation, has started on a different path and is now dating Reverend Paul Coates.

Nige Carter
(JOE SIMS)
Nige is an employee at Mark Latimer’s plumbing company and a trusted family friend.

Most of the time British TV is not very good in coming up with a follow up season which is as good as the first and this was no different. It's watchable enough thanks to a great cast but by the end it seemed like a waste of time.

Yeah, from what I've seen, it doesn't seem like too many people liked the second season. And it seems that a third season is confirmed?

It does seem rather unnecessary considering the original season ended pretty much with a complete sense of closure.

Of course, I will still be watching this.... Though, I don't have BBC America, so I'm fine waiting until it hits Netflix.

Lightbulb Broadchurch Season 2 In The USA - BBC America - SEASON 2 PREMIERES MARCH 4 AT 10/9C

David Tennant On What To Expect From The New Season

[Show spoiler]
Quote:
As the new season of Broadchurch will premiere in the USA next week on BBC America, read what David Tennant has to say about what's in store for fans...

What can we expect from the new season of Broadchurch?
It's a very different type of story. I think we all found it hard to predict where Chris (Chibnall) was going to go and how he was going to tell a story faithful to season one without underselling the veracity of it. It would have been ludicrous and a bit disappointing to discover another body on the beach and begin another eight episodes of whodunnit...he absolutely doesn't do that. Tonally it's the same show but structurally it is completely different.
This is a really clever and exciting bit of writing, still a thriller but not the same type. Without giving anything away, it is almost impossible to describe but by the first commercial break people will be enthralled.

How did it feel to be back in West Bay?
I loved being back in West Bay. A lot of people assume we film the whole thing in Dorset but of course we don't. We film the beach scenes, anything to do with water down there everything else in London for interiors and we use locations around Bristol but West Bay is the location that everyone recognises - the Jurassic cliffs (that poor Danny was found at the bottom of in season one) still feature prominently in season two, we'll see the police station again and other locations audiences have seen before. We always enjoy coming back here -
this is where Chris Chibnall our writer lives, so he writes to his locale.

Is it getting harder to keep the Broadchurch secrets?
No, I don't think it has got any harder to keep the secrets. I think it frustrates those around you but I am well practised at not giving anything away; withholding everything. I don't mind it. I quite like being the holder of secrets. I get frustrated if I'm the one that doesn't know them, but happy to be in the slightly superior position of knowing what comes next...
We had the advantage in series one where nobody really cared because no one knew what was coming. This time there’s expectation which is difficult to manage. But if that means we’re a victim of success then that’s a good thing.

What can you tell us?
It's a very different type of story, it would have felt wrong for series two to be another body on another beach. Writer Chris Chibnall has created a story which is structurally very different but is still absolutely in that world both tonally and emotionally.

Has it been difficult keeping storylines under wraps during filming?
Early on we were stalked quite heavily by photographers and there was some graveyard stuff that made it into some of the papers which led to speculation, some of which was accurate, some wildly inaccurate. But it feeds the beast, gets people interested so I guess a bit of speculation won't do any harm.

How did you feel to read episode one?
It was exciting to be back in that world and we pick up where series one left off in many ways. I was absolutely hooked again, Chris has structured that first 15 minutes beautifully.

How difficult was it keeping the identity of the killer secret in season one?
I didn't know until episode eight arrived in a brown envelope, which was about two thirds through filming. It was quite good because in each interrogation scene I genuinely didn't know who was lying and who wasn't. I remember a point half way through filming when Chris [Chibnall] came on set and showed us a sequence of early footage. We were all crushed into the upper floor of the dining bus before filming and he was shaking with nerves. He said, ‘I know some of you want to know and some don’t and I've decided I’m not going to tell you!’ So the suspense was eked out even longer. A similar thing happened with script distribution this time.

Is it nice that people now recognise you for Broadchurch rather than simply Doctor Who?
Well it's certainly different, yes. Not that I'm ever sad to talk about Doctor Who or to be recognised for that. I will always be terribly proud of it but, yes, it was lovely to be part of something else that seemed to attract an equal level of enthusiasm.

How did the new cast — Charlotte Rampling, Marie-Anne Jean Baptiste, Eve Myles, James D'Arcy and Phoebe Waller-Bridge — integrate?
Extremely well mercifully. If it were all to end today, there are a lot of people I'll miss. It's one of those jobs you come away from with a much heavier phone book. Everyone's bonded by being a Broadchurcher.

You've also appeared in the American remake Gracepoint, how was that experience?
It's very unusual to be asked so that's one of the main reasons to do it. It was too extraordinary an opportunity to turn down and it was the same but different. As I finished filming Gracepoint in Canada, the first script for Broadchurch season two arrived and I thought it would be interesting to read it. So I did and I thought it was fantastically clever and brilliant and thrilling but completely disorientating. It suddenly felt like an entirely different world so I put it down until I caught the plane home.

Do you see Emmett Carver, your character from Gracepoint, as a totally
different character to Alex Hardy?

I wouldn't say Carver and Hardy are completely different characters - in my head they occupy very different spaces. Clearly in many ways they are quite similar but don't feel like the same person, in fact they feel quite distinct. Although the story is in many ways similar, Gracepoint feels like a different world.

Did you feel protective of the character?
You do think, 'I don't want anyone else to have a go'. I thought if they're going to let me have a try, I'm going to take that opportunity. Then you get there and it's its own thing with its own life and momentum.

Did you watch the season one finale as it went out?
I couldn't because I was on a night shoot in Cardiff for the 50th anniversary of Doctor Who at the time but I was following its progress through text messages I was receiving between takes. It was exciting and really felt like an event.

Thanks to ITV Press and TV Choice.

INTERVIEW: David Tennant Talks To TV Guide About Broadchurch Season 2

Quote:
[Show spoiler]David Tennant is interviewed in the latest edition of US magazine TV Guide about the new season of Broadchurch which begins on BBC America on Thursday. Read what he had to say here:

David: This season is a different type of thriller. It’s not 'Here’s a murder and off we go.'

Viewers were led to believe your character, Detective Inspector Alec Hardy, and fellow cop Ellie Miller (Olivia Colman) wouldn’t return for a second season, since the murder of young Danny Latimer was solved and Hardy was near death. What happened?
Broadchurch was very much conceived as a one-off, though we knew more than we let on. Halfway through season 1, Chris Chibnall, the show’s creator, told us he had an idea for a further story.

Which is a good thing, since the series has become a global sensation.
I never thought it’d have a life on the other side of the world. It’s being remade in many countries. I’m working on my Icelandic!

Are you disappointed that Gracepoint didn’t take off?
I’m not. It would have been lovely if we had reached more of an audience, but I think the viewers who did come for the ride were moved and intrigued. Hopefully it will pique their interest and BBC America will get a new audience.

Where do we find Hardy and Miller when the second season opens?
They are both in desperate places. Hardy’s off the force and very sick. We’ll discover early on why he’s still hanging around Broadchurch. Miller is a cop in another town and she’s trying, unsuccessfully, to hold her family together. She’s living with the terrible consequences of her husband Joe’s (Matthew Gravelle) arrest for Danny’s murder.

Do we learn more about the Sandbrook case, the unsolved murders of two young girls that haunted Hardy last season?
Yes. Hardy still has those demons. And the chickens will come home to roost!

Broadchurch returns to BBC America on Wednesday 4th March at 10/9c.

Many thanks to Kay for sending the scan.

When Broadchurch S2 was on here in the UK, ratings dropped rapidly after the first episode. Eventually it got beaten in the ratings by Silent Witness on the rival channel, a run-of-the-mill British crime procedural which has been on for a couple of decades and far from the type of "event television" Broadchurch gets hyped as here.

Just because a lot of people like myself still stuck it out doesn't mean they liked it and many especially hated the ending.

It was. They tried to followup the storyline from last season with a trial which was laughable at how over-the-top the defense attorney was. I'm not sure how different the court system is in Britain vs in the States, but I can't believe a lawyer would be allowed to treat the prosecution's witnesses in that manner.

Also, the new storyline which they try to deal with simultaneously never really felt cohesive with the Joe Miller trial. The new characters were all over the map with their behavior and the ending was silly. It wound up being like
[Show spoiler]Murder on the Orient Express where essentially every single one of the suspects was involved somehow.

Overall, it was a bad 2nd season. They should've just done an entirely new story with just Miller and Hardy returning.

Watched the first season on Netflix and it was heart-breaking. Great to be able to catch up on shows like this on Netflix. Saw Top of the Lake, The Killing, and The Fall, too.
