I was checking out the HD-DVD software forum and their was a thread discussing how Fox movies were being released in Germany on HD-DVD. The hd-dvd fans were crowing how it was sticking it to Sony. Whats the story?
Also, on a side note. You read the threads on the HD-DVD forum. You would think their is no concern about the 70/30 sales split. Its amazing. What's the story? |

There will typically be a few titles that aren't distributed by Fox and even Disney in Europe and may show up on HD DVD, but not the majority of them. Likewise, there are a few HD DVD only titles in the US that have been released on Blu-ray in Europe. In the big picture, it is not going to make a difference to the general buying public as they will never be available for sale in say Best Buy and most people will never know they exist. They are still not going to get the big movies like anything from Pixar or Disney's Pirates movies. The only one from Disney that I know that is available is Bridge to Terabithia.

imdb.com is a good source to find global distribution rights for each movie.
Buying movies from international sources is not cheap. Granted there might be irresistible movies you just have to get, the reality is that they can cost up to 3x a comparable local HDM would sell for. Although the well heeled may do this a lot, typically, for ordinary people, only those who can expense these purchases actually do this repeatedly. |

There are various distribution deals. Fantastic Four is distributed by Highlight Films in Germany, and is available on HD DVD from there. I have Face/Off and Bruce Almighty on Blu-ray. Maybe Paramount and Universal are sticking it to Toshiba? Or, maybe it is because they are distributed by Buena Vista in the UK. ![]() Gary |
