Default a bit of a let down

let me start by conceding that what i'm about to do is not really a fair comparison, but anyway...

i was never insanely interested in seeing a blu-ray demo this early, because i knew i'd be at least wait for ps3, which is still a while away. but i was at best buy the other day and finally got a chance to check it out.

unfortunately, before i went to best buy, i had been at my local imax theatre. and yeah, the whole blu-ray experience was a little anti-climactic.

to be perfectly honest, i can't even remember what kind of tv was used in the display, maybe it just wasn't very good. but i was actually astounded at how relatively poor the picture quality was. one thing that really struck me as unacceptable was how pixelated a lot of the diagonal lines looked. maybe someone can tell me if this is commonplace, or if it's kind of anomalous.

i'm not even sure that i'm making a point most people on this board will care about, but i guess what i'm getting at is that regardless of what the pinnacle of high definition is--whether it's blu-ray or hd-dvd, plasma or lcd, or codec A or codec B--high definition just isn't that good.

so, high definition really does represent the zenith of consumer-grade digital video... i think the theatre's position as my first choice for the ultimate viewing experience is safe for a while to come. even if i have to sit in the bottom corner of the theatre while my shoes stick to the floor.
