Comes out next week, theatrically. Has Jim Parsons as the alien and Rhianna as the kid.

It reminds me of Lilo and Stitch from Disney. I'd be interested to hear about the 3D in this Dreamworks title.

There's a 3D preview for this on the "Penguins of Madagascar" 3D disc, and while it looks pretty gorgeous (typical Dreamworks), Jim Parsons' incessant neurotic yapping as the alien became grating REALLY quickly. I'm sure I'll pick it up anyway if reviews are decent, since Dreamworks has a good track record, but I sure hope Parsons' character (who I realize is supposed to be annoying) is more endearing in the full movie.

This is the only animated film Dreamworks will be releasing this year, if anyone wants to show some support.

For the past number of years they've been releasing two and sometimes three movies per year, but lately they've been undeperforming, apparently struggling and have had to closedown PDI, (their original CG animation studio) and they're now renting their Glendale studio after being forced to sell it off.

Home does bear some similarity to Lilo and Stitch, as well as various other alien-centric animated movies of recent years. Doesn't seem like the freshest offering, maybe a bit on the generic side. And there seems to be no escaping the obnoxious babbling of celebrity voice-actors. Although Dreamworks are usually reliable enough in delivering top notch visual entertainment and 3-D thrills.

Which is a shame because their output has been pretty much fantastic the last few years. Their films have certainly been MUCH better than anything Pixar has done since Wall E and Up.

The Pixar films I really liked were Monsters Inc, The Incredibles and Wall E. People tend to put them on a pedestal more than I'd like, but it isn't for nothing. They've yet to impress me with their handling of 3-D though.

Dreamworks has tended to be a lot more hit and miss, but when they get it right they've made some great movies, and the enthusiasm they've demonstrated for 3-D has been refreshing, particularly after some of the more lackluster efforts from other studios.

I'll check out Home at some point. While the publicity for the movie hasn't really made a great impression on me, their trailers have often misrepresented them. Films like Kung Fu Panda, the Croods and Megamind turned out a lot better than I thought they were going to be.

The Dragon films were great, Croods is great, Turbo was also really good fun (and had excellent 3D) even though it flopped as was Mr Peabody. It's a shame because at least they try and do something different. The only weaker ones have been Guardians and Epic, the rest have been pretty good.

I used to love Pixar, but they have become awfully bland churning out endless 'direct to video' type sequels and tripe like Brave. Even Disney makes much better stuff now than Pixar does.

Then that would explain why it was a weak Dreamworks pic

Really looking forward to the Peanuts film. Family and I plan to go out and watch it when it hits theaters sometime around Thanksgiving.

I thought Epic was pretty good. Visually it's stunning, and they make good use of 3D. The only thing that bothered me about that was whatever genius decided they were hopping on the bandwagon with the modern trend for bland one-word title animated movies. They were going to call it "The Leafmen", which seems a lot more unique and memorable.

There was a time when Blue Sky seemed like a promising studio, these days I don't rate them so highly. They also did Rio, I couldn't believe how awful that was compared to how great it looked like it was going to be.

I'm afraid for DreamWorks. I actually prefer this studio to Pixar with their wonderful 3d and beautiful animation. Home looks to be no exception with awesome 3d based upon the trailer I saw. I will definitely be seeing this at the theater. However, I worry that this movie will bomb like Turbo did because it's a new IP. Maybe the fact that Home has no competition in March/April will help it fare better at the box office? I don't think DreamWorks can financially survive another box office flop can they?

Well they do have other projects in production for next year. One massive hit can change everything. The success of Shrek probably bailed them out in the early years of the studio when they had a series of flops.

Home opened this past weekend in first place in Russia, Spain, and the UK where it's doing a lot better than Penguins did, but not quite Dragons numbers. http://www.cartoonbrew.com/box-offic...ce-110599.html

I didn't mind it, it started out really great and then died in the last 3rd. It was beautiful to look at though.

I thought both Rio's were ok, they did look great, but certainly not as good as any of the Dreamworks stuff.

Rio had many redeeming features, I loved the colour palette and the posing in the animation of the birds, but at the same time, other aspects of the film really grated. Blue Sky can be frustrating like that. I was almost tempted to see the sequel with how good the animation looked, then remembered how much I disliked the original.

As much as they've improved their visuals over the years, I think the original Ice Age might still be their strongest film to date.

Some of the musical numbers look absolutely amazing.

Yeah agreed I think Ice Age 1 is their best as well, though I also liked The Lorax as well and it had excellent 3D.

Not to be the one to do this again, but The Lorax was actually by Illumination Entertainment, who are behind the Despicable Me films. There is a connection there because that studio was started by Chris Meledandri, who previously headed Blue Sky Studios during the period where they became a feature animation studio and was a producer on their early films.

I'd forgotten about Blue Sky's Dr Seuss film, 'Horton hears a Who', that was a superior effort, it's too bad they weren't doing them in 3D at the time.

Yeah, Peanuts should be good. The 3D too. It's going up against 007 Spectre. I'm not a big fan of Daniel Craig's stoic James Bond where he almost never cracks a smile or expression, but clearly he's financially one of the most successful 007's. Even so, I have never missed a 007 movie in theaters since I started going to the movies as a kid.

Thanks for the info on the 3D trailer.

I might have considered this movie if they showed some action or adventure, but like most of Dreamwork's previews to their movies, they mostly just show the gags and jokes.
