Default Star Trek Season 2 - curiously delayed on HD-DVD

Just found this on WWW.TVSHOWSONDVD.COM - Star Trek Season 2 is being delayed on HD-DVD (a Paramount release!) --- until - SUMMER, 2008. Makes me wonder if this is for a curious type of reason...like Paramount dropping HD-DVD by then??

They probably didn't sell too many copies of Season 1 on HD and realize that there's not as much interest in this series on HD at this point. (Now, had it been released in Blu, that would have been a different matter.)

If they were dropping HD DVD then they would probably just cancel it. Maybe they are waiting until there are more HD DVD users to sell more since the Season 1 didn't really sell all that well.

And what neither of us mentioned, the ludicrous price: $132 on amazon, I believe. I have them all in SD and just can't see spending that much more. (Heck, I wouldn't pay $132 per season for any other Star Trek franchise titles--even my fave DS9!)

Season 1 sold a whole 7600 copies so I'm not surprised they are delaying Season 2. All of the Trekkies boycotted this release because of the combo disc and have told Paramount that they will not buy until they release a DVD only version.

Paying for something you don't need or want is pretty silly.

It's not so silly when your agenda is to artificially inflate HD DVD sales numbers by forcing DVD only people without HD DVD players to buy them.

Agreed; it's quite ironic that the Duddites[tm] believe that HD DVD/DVD combo discs are an advantage!

Exactly. Collectors, who are the primary audience for ST:TOS in the first place do not want flippers. Period. There's a huge perception issue in place on flippers "making it cost more". While, yes, their low yields and high defects make it much more expensive to manufacture (thus the higher retail price), the perception by the end user is that "I'm paying $140 because I'm buying it twice"

If the majority of HD-DVD owners chose HD-DVD because of the cheap player price...why would they pay over $130.00 for this? It cost almost as much as the $199 Toshiba player(which also sold for $99 at one point).

Well - I think that the HD-DVD / DVD are a great idea. For those who have bought into HD-DVD, when their machines stop working and no more are being produced - they will still have a Standard def DVD to be able to watch.

Toshiba was really thinking ahead!!

I agree with that's been stated here (and how can you argue with only 7600 copies sold?). The strategy of this release was "jackassy" to say the least.

The reality is, the HD DVD combo strategy has benefited Blu-ray in several ways.

perhaps all these HD DVD/DVD combo discs are in anticipation of the end of HD DVD. If/When HD DVD fails, at least it will still play in DV players .

Seriously though, to try to artificially inflate the numbers like this totally backfired on them. No one is buying them and it is obvious why. I am sure they are now regretting not releasing this on DVD as well.
On the other hand, if they released this to all 3 formats separately, the sales would have been through the roof... I would have purchased a BD of Star Trek myself... when the prices drop to half of what it is at now.

Interesting info just came down the pipe on this

Apparently the HDers have been pressuring all their studios to go combo only, to completely kill the seperate DVD release so they could cheat their numbers (we sold 8.2 million copies!!!!!(not that I think they could ever press that many reliable discs ) )

Can you imagine the disaster of coasters if they started trying to do that?

Supposedly Uni and WB laughed hysterically at them, but Paramount may have been required to give it a whirl by their contract. Fortunately I doubt 7600 copies comes even close to the numbers that would have required it to continue

I really have to laugh at Toshiba; I mean they have to force their products on people by either paying off studios, giving away players, or trying to force combo-only discs. As been stated before, they are and will try anything and will fight to the very end. I just hope Warner sees through all of this.

if paramount does do this, they are in for a world of hurt with millions of consumers, unless they hevily subsidize the software. people are going to look at things like bee movie and see that its 29.99 and simply walk away. if i understand you correctly, you are saying that paramount is thinking about dropping dvd. that is insane. if they do that, there is no way on god's green earth they are going to come out ahead with only 150 million dollars.

its good to see universal laughing at hd dvd.

No, I'm saying that Toshiba wants them to, and they may have been required to do a test case pressing

No one in their right mind, no matter how big the check wants to tie their entire business to something with the coaster rate that HD combos have
