Default Superman and Superman II filming locations

Hi. Was the scene at Lois Lane's apartment filmed at a real rooftop? Seems pretty real with the final shot zooming out and Luis standing there.

Also, in Superman II, were the action scenes at a traffic intersection toward the end of the movie filmed in Manhattan, or was this on a set? Sometimes the shops look real and other times they look artificial.

Niagara Falls also looked real to me. Oh, and what about the "North Pole" location--was any of that real snow?

Niagara Falls was absolutely filmed in niagara falls. Not sure about Lois apartment but it does look very real and this was well before CGI.

Same for the traffic scenes.... Many look very real but a few do have that movie set look to them.

This really needs it's own thread? Couldn't have asked this in the superman thread?

Most of the first two "Superman" films were shot in England, not the United States. The Arctic landscape was largely made from Styrofoam and matte paintings, while the Fortress' interior was on a soundstage. The exteriors for the Daily Planet were filmed at the Daily News building in New York, and I think some of the Kansas scenes were filmed stateside...but 90% of both films were made overseas.

I guess you would be correct that most of these films was shot in England, in that the interiors would have been done in Pinewood Studios.

However, I think all of the scenes supposed to be Smallville in Kansas were actually shot in Canada. Other scenes such as the one where Larry Hagaman also appear to have been shot in Alberta. I think scenes involving the San Andreas fault were shot in New Mexico.

All the farm scenes were shot here in Alberta, around the town of Vulcan. Vulcan always has a stand at the Calgary Comic expo and last year they had Christopher Reeve's Supes cape on display.

The exterior shots of Lois Lane's apartment was done at 240 Central Park South in New York City. However the balcony scenes were shot on the Pinewood Studios famed M Stage. There are behind the scenes photos of these.

Interesting bit of information. During the Manhattan shoot, in July 1977 the famed New York City blackout happened, delaying the shoot for hours. It was suspected at first that the immense power draw from the mobile generators on the Superman set were the cause of the power failure. It was not the case, but still to think that Superman was suspected of causing the blackout is quite hilarious.

...in fact, every single movie question simply MUST have it's own thread, no matter how trivial, minute and seemingly insignificant! That's the only way all of these threads will ever make a lick of sense in any collective cinephile cognizance sort of manner!!! It's imperative because then ...and only then, will we, fine folk, all finally be able to see the truth, discover the answers and finally transcend all of the endless petty arguments, rabid debates and troublesome disagreements which have plagued the internet film community ever since the dawn of ...umm, the dawn of... uhh... the dawn of the Internet!!!

Geez man, why must you stand in the way of true and everlasting progress?
