Arrow It Follows Too/It Follows Again/It Still Follows, etc. It Follows Sequel?

Quote:
One of those surprise sleeper horror hits that comes along every once in a while, It Follows has enjoyed exceptional word-of-mouth (including an extremely respectable four stars from Empire) and box office far beyond anyone's expectations. Inevitably then, talk has turned to how to continue its success with a sequel.

“I don’t want to give away too much, but we’ve thought about it,” says Tom Quinn, co-president of distributors Radius-TWC. Director David Robert Mitchell, meanwhile, says he's "certainly open to it".

If you've yet to catch it, It Follows sees its protagonist doggedly pursued by a mysterious entity that manifests itself as a variety of shuffling injured strangers, or sometimes as people known to its victims. In an interesting twist on the slasher movie "promiscuous teens get killed" trope, its rules are that the curse is sexually transmitted, and if you find yourself affected, you can just shag someone else and get rid of it, like a chain letter.

The film's creepily ambiguous ending and that concept mean a series could potentially run and run (or maybe walk and walk, like the thing). Quinn doesn't reveal a great deal, but does hint at "flipping the title", which as EW point out gives us something like Follow It, which could potentially be a very smart reversal.

While the money men are inclined to strike while the iron's hot, however, Mitchell is more cautious. "I have a lot of different kinds of projects in many different genres," he told Vulture, "so I don’t know that a sequel would be the next thing that I would do. I just kinda want to see how things play out.”

Will the rights owners wait for him or continue without him? We'll keep you posted.

I'd really prefer not. I absolutely loved this film, and thought it worked great as a standalone film. No need for a sequel or to make it into a franchise. Leave it alone and move on to more original ideas.

I like the idea of "Follow It", tracing the curse back could be an interesting film.

I haven't seen this movie yet, but from what everyone says and what I've been told it's very late '70s/'80s horror in style. So, making a sequel - maybe not even half as good as the original - and then potentially more after that until it turns into a long-running series would feel... right, in some twisted way. It'd almost be too good a tribute.

Follow It actually sounds awesome. Honestly not the direction I'd have expected a sequel to go but (thought didn't even cross my mind) that would be perfect. Could be really great. If they do one that's definitely where I think they should take it.

I'm agree with jacobsever, there's absolutely no need for a new movie (or worse, a trilogy since studios really enjoy this kind of plan).

True. I would be scared of them ruining it. But I have faith in David Robert Mitchell to do a good job continuing this story if it happens.

I do love how ambiguous the first is though. Even the final shot I thought was great. Though it seems to p*ss off many.

I'm torn between loving this movie and wanting to see more of its universe, and fearing that a haphazard/rushed sequel could damage the first film's impact.

I didn't enjoy Insidious nearly as much as I loved It Follows, but I still really liked it, and the terrible sequel almost seemed to be working to make the first film worse.

I'd hate to see something similar happen with this movie.

I do agree with that. I loved Insidious. But the sequel sucked and it makes me like the first a little less.

It was inevitably going to get a sequel. It's total sequel material.

Do I want to see one? Not really. Will there be one? Most likely.

The way they ended it
[Show spoiler](with a cliffhanger or suggestion)
means they can pick up where the last one left off if they wanted to.

What if IT is actually the prior victims that IT killed, and uses their former bodies to find the next target? Or maybe they're the souls it ingests?

That wouldn't make sense though, since one of the forms it took was of
[Show spoiler]the mother of Jay's neighbor
, who was alive and well.

That's true. Maybe a combination of living or dead.

Like most movies, especially ones that are somewhat vague and insist that the viewer thinks about it afterwards, a sequel wouldn't serve much purpose other than expanding upon the questions by providing answers.

It won't ruin the first movie but with an idea of a title being "Follow It", it's safe to guess what direction they would take. Sure, if they waited for the original director to return, I would be more enthused, but the idea doesn't interest me much anyways.
