Default Rocky Horror Picture Show (FOX)

Quote:
Back in 2006 Marilyn Manson was to star in a remake to The Rocky Horror Picture Show for 20th Century Fox. He told E! News that he approached star as the sweet transvestite, Dr. Frank-N-Furter, originally played by Tim Curry in the 1975 cult classic musical.

Now, nearly a decade later, FOX has decided a revival will happen, cast contingent, as a television miniseries.

The two-hour event special is executive produced by Gail Berman of The Jackal Group, the 1975 movie’s producer Lou Adler and Kenny Ortega, who is set to direct and choreograph, says Deadline.

Tentatively titled “The Rocky Horror Picture Show Event,” the project is described as a reimagining of the campy horror feature, which, 40 years after its release continues to play in theaters around the world – the longest theatrical distribution frame for any film in history.

Like was the original plan, the remake is expected to stick faithfully to the text and the score but reimagine the story visually.

In Jim Sharman’s 1975 original, a newly engaged couple (Susan Sarandon and Barry Bostwick) have a breakdown in an isolated area and must pay a call to the bizarre residence of Dr. Frank-N-Furter (Curry).

Man. I haven't even seen the movie, though I own the digibook. I'll have to get on that.

I don't even remotely see this working. Tim Curry made the original movie.

Orange is the New Black star Laverne Cox has signed on to headline FOX‘s upcoming telefilm remake of the cult classic musical The Rocky Horror Picture Show. Variety reports that She’ll play Dr. Frank N. Furter, the self-described “sweet transvestite from transexual Transylvania,” iconically played by Tim Curry in director Jim Sharman’s 1975 original.

Jim Sharman also directed the original stage play version of The Rocky Horror Picture Show. Featuring music, lyrics and book by Richard O’Brien, The Rocky Horror Picture show premiered at the Royal Court Theatre in London in 1973. A sendup of classic B-movies, the story involves a just-engaged couple (played in the original film by Susan Sarandon and Barry Bostwick) whose car breaks down outside a mysterious castle. Seeking aid, the pair find themselves overnight guests of the mad Doctor.

Although The Rocky Horror Picture show initially bombed at the box office, it soon developed a cult following and now holds the record for the single longest theatrical run of all time. Thanks largely to midnight screenings, The Rocky Horror Picture Show has consistently played in theaters for 30 years.

The Rocky Horror Picture Show telefilm will be directed by Kenny Ortega and is being planned to air next fall. The High School Musical helmer will direct, choreograph and executive produce alongside Lou Adler (who also served as executive producer on the 1975 original). Gail Berman, meanwhile, is producing.

Laverne Cox, who was nominated for a Primetime Emmy for her work on Orange is the New Black, has also appeared on television shows like “The Mindy Project” and “Girlfriends’ Guide to Divorce”. She was recently seen on the big screen in director Paul Weitz’s Grandma. In addition to her acting career, the openly transgender star is a vocal civil rights activist. You can read about her efforts at the official Laverne Cox site.

I'm surprised this is actually still happening. I just don't see the point since there is still live shows of the original RHS with different casts, if you just want a different take on the material than the 1975 movie. If this has to happen I hope they at least stay more faithful to the original play With Rocky having speaking parts. I think of all the popular franchises they have remade this is probably one of the biggest mistakes considering how devoted people still are to the original and the fact that they still go to showings of that film. Even the episode of Glee that payed tribute to it, that aired a while back was pretty hated by fans.

Usually the point of a reboot or a remake is to introduce a property to a new generation of people. This is one case where it is considered a right of passage for fans to introduce this film to the younger generation.

On a much more exciting note for me personally BBC America is showing a version of the original production. Originally it premiered on October 17th but I missed it, however it's suppose to air again on October 25th. Really excited for this, I've always heard good things about David Bedella's take on Frank. This shows again just how pointless a remake is to.

I like Riff Raff's look. That "person" should not have been Frank though. Sounds like she's trying to imitate Tim Curry and it's nauseating. She's good in OitnB but she's no Tim curry.

Was it already taped? Or is that just "stock" footage in trailer?

I'll give it a chance, but we all know it won't and can't beat the original.
I liked Riff Raff (Reeve Carney it's a great actor), but he's less stranger/weird than in the original (and the weirdness is part of the fun of the original). Also, I liked Brad and Janet, but Magenta looks terrible. As for Frank, it seems Laverne is trying to imitate Tim, even in the way she talks, and this can be very annoying.

I just really hope they don't screw with the performances of Over at the Frankenstein Place, Sweet Tranvestite (Frank's entrance, this needs to be great), Don't Dream It (please, please, please don't screw this one, of all songs of the film this is my favorite and has such an iconic performance by Tim) and Super Heroes.

it looks alright, but I'm not expecting much from it. I'll watch it just because I love the original film and this seems more like something that can be redone other times since it's silly and not come off like they just ran out of ideas... but Brad and Janet just seem too stereotypical "hot" to be Brad and Janet though lol
