Default It happened

I watched the regular DVD versions of "Hot Rod," "Paris, Je T'aime" and "Oceans 12" this week, and... they all looked like absolute crap! I have gotten so used to the glorious look of Blu-Ray on my 61" Samsung DLP LED HDTV that I fear I won't be able to watch a regular DVD again.

My girlfriend noticed it too. She said "Wow... these regular DVDs look so grainy compared to Blu-Ray discs." Ouch! Can you blame her? Even upconverted, it's just not the same.

We popped in the Blu-Ray version of "Bad Santa" and instantly felt better with the picture quality, the audio, and the damn great movie! (Check it out if you haven't seen it. HILARIOUS!! Co-written and produced by The Coen Brothers.)

I have mixed feelings about the revelation. Part of me is sad because most of my library will now look like crud. Part of me is happy because my love for Blu-Ray has grown stronger than ever before.

For a year, I have been buying/renting standard DVDs alongside of Blu-Ray's, but now... I don't think I can ever go back.

A moment of silence... for my expansive SD DVD library...

I DO BLU! DO YOU?

I feel you 100%. My 180 DVDs are now second fiddle.

Drives me insane, I never noticed the graininess before.

I'll still watch the classics though.

It's not grain. It's the softness (because of the low res), compression artifacts (generally the most offensive), a large amount of EE on many titles.

There's a few titles here and there that are really excellently encoded. One I just recently found was Borat (who'd have thought?) -- it's probably one of the best encodes I've seen on a DVD... if all DVDs looked like that I wouldn't mind watching them.

Sadly, even Netflix's Watch Instantly looks better than DVD (it uses 2mb/s VC-1, so compression artifacts are generally not there, from what I've seen -- of course there is still EE and the DVD res).

Coming into this forum and meeting you guys feel like I just took a step into the future.

Because out there in the world, there's alot of people who still say things like. "HD-DVD and Blu-ray are like laser disc. DVDs however, cannot be beat."

Ah, the confusion in people, all the misinformation. I hope it end soon.

What's funny is that once everyone start getting into the world of hi-def and bow to Blu-ray. Me, you, and the thousand of others on this board will have this to say. "We told you so."

180 dvds? Multiply that by a factor of 10 for me. It's a hard knock life .

Default select dvds

I only buy dvds that are from universal at this point, and a select few at that ( usually the 2/15 stuff). Paramount can kiss my bottom, for at least another year. Yesterday was a good day, At World's End Superbad, plus I found Bad Santa and From Hell, been looking for them. Now I'm just waiting for my Harry Potter Boxset from Amazon.

It's a Merry Blu Christmas this year!
*Tips hat to Michael Bay as well*

I picked up a used DVD copy of "The Last Kiss" a few days ago at blockbuster. I don't see this film going high-def at all.

This is exactly why I sold my 1,000+ DVD collection on ebay back in early 05. Just enough time to get good cash back on it. There are only 15 DVD's left in our house, and from my sig you see there are over 100 BD movies. We only buy BD movies now. No DVD's or DUD's here.

Well when I started noticing that I was watching my bluray movies much more often than my large dvd collection just because they were so much more visually pleasing, I took a large portion of my dvd collection to my local Hastings and sold them back and got nearly $200 credit. Most of the movies I took back were movies that I hadn't watched in awhile or would want to buy on bluray eventually. You guys should think about doing the same at your local store that buys back dvd's because eventually they will just be a distant memory and you won't look at them again. So, you should get as much as you can out of them now. I'm even thinking about taking more back just because I cannot stand watching an upconverted SD movie. There is no comparison whatsoever.

A great film on a lower quality format still beats a bad film on a great format to me.

Of course, a great film on a great format tops them all but that isn't the choice yet for most of what is out there. So I be glad to take any you want to unload

I haven't bought a DVD since April (purchased WKRP Season 1). Afterwards, I've only purchased 12 Hi-Def titles.

I'm more picky about what I buy now. If I think I won't watch a title twice, I won't buy it.
