Default About to buy speakers!!!

I am about to buy speakers for my new Onkyo 805 7.1 surround system. This is where I put out the battle cry...

AUDIOPHILES UNITE!

Guide me wisely into that dark night! Lead me from Bose temptation and delivery me from evil!!! Let's assume that my budget is $2000 CDN.

Quad L-ite system. I don't know the CDN price, but US is $1500. iagamerica.com/quad. It is a whole system that has been rated by many magazines as being in their top five systems for under $2k

I would have recommended Paradigm Monitor 7 series (low end) matching set matched with Hsu Reasearch subwoofer. It will cost you about 2.500 CDN.

This is where I got my fronts & sub & saved about $400us, I don't know about if they ship or the cost of shipping to Canada. Shipping for me was $50for the sub (48 pounds) & $50 for the 2 fronts speaker (44 pounds). The 'Stadium' JBL's look nice & a good price.

'stadium' speaker:

Where did you get your Onkyo 805 7.1 system from? I'm in Canada too and am looking for it or the 705. Thanks.

Also, very interested in what speaker suggestions you end up going with. Let me know if they sound good with the Onkyo system.

I picked it up on my way through Montana last weekend. Got it for $769 (no tax)... a steal considering that it's $1499 everywhere I've looked in Canada. I happened to be driving from Northern Ontario to Vancouver through the US and decided to stop in somewhere to check it out. I'm going to seek out a Paradigm dealer here in Vancouver and check them out first. I've gotten word from some people in the home theatre industry that they have a very high quality product and a decent price for Canadians since they are made in Canada anyways. But, I did get a listen to some Definitive Technology speakers and they were very impressive... but pricey.

Thanks. I guess I will have to make a trip down south one of these days.

+1

The Paradigms seem to be quite reasonable, too, but I've not heard them or read anything about them except the flagship model (Reference S8?).

Since your in Canada, you could look into Energy speakers. You could check into the Reference Connoisseur series or the C-Series depending on how much each goes for. Also, it would be good to look into Kef and NHT. All great speakers.

I must say, that if you could find the NHT Classic series for a good price, they would be a great match up.

Check Axiom as well. I recently upgraded to their M80, VP150, & QS8s and the sound is absolutely fantastic, some of the best I've heard in their price range.

ASCEND ACOUSTICS Speakers

Our mission is to manufacture high quality loudspeakers that reproduce the source material as accurately as possible, whether music or a soundtrack. This demands the use of low distortion, custom designed components combined with advanced crossover technologies that provide a linear frequency response on- and off-axis. Naturally, these components are expensive. To keep our unique loudspeakers affordable we sell them factory-direct to you, bypassing the markups inherent in the retail distribution chain.

Another vote for the Ascends.I have the Sierra 1s across the front and insanely the CMT-340 SEs for surrounds (massive overkill, but super sweet for surround music, the only reason I did this is that my L/R Sierras were won in a raffle and the 340s were my old mains). I would say CMT-340 SEs or Sierras for front stage, and CBM-170 SE or HTM-200 SEs for surround would be great, I had the former as surrounds before my good luck and they were spectacular.

For sub, I would say get the model of HSU sub that best fits your budget after you get the speakers. I have a VTF-3 HO Turbo and have to be very careful with it to avoid structural damage to the house, but it also is tight and detailed for music.

I don't know the current exchange rate, so I don't know which combo would best fit your budget with shipping, but any combo with these would do you great.

Paradigm's certainly are worthy of consideration.
http://www.stereophile.com/standloudspeakers/907para/
"Last week, though, he stopped at my answer. "I'm reviewing some $250/pair speakers."
"Is that all? That must be disappointing."
"Actually, I'm having a ball with them. They're the Paradigm Atoms."
"Paradigm? Those are supposed to be good."
Charles has been bemused by my tales of $10,000/pair Vandersteens, $20,000/pair Dynaudios, and $28,000/pair Wilson Audio WATT/Puppys. But $250/pair Atoms? That impressed him—and me too, when you get right down to it.
"The Atoms sorted out instrumental dynamics and acoustic interactions about as well as any loudspeaker I've heard. Yes, that grin on my face was huge. Everybody likes good sound, but what everybody really loves is a bargain. The Atom is a steal."
"I suggest, however, that you put the Paradigm Atom Monitor v.5 near the top of that list. It looks good, it's built well, and it sounds good enough that this hard-core music junkie hasn't listened to his $10,000 loudspeakers for a month. Oh sure, the big guys can do things the Atoms can't—but what the Atoms do well, they do well enough that I'm not even thinking about what I might be missing.
I'm thinking about what to listen to next."
