Default Tokyopop Comes Back To Life To Do Both Anime And Manga Again

Quote:
Tokyopop announced at its Anime Expo panel on Thursday that it is planning to begin publishing manga again in 2016. The company is seeking to license "hidden gems that are not yet noticed" from small or independent publishers.

In addition, Tokyopop plans to publish art books and collectors editions, and will consider light novels.

The company is also looking to get into film and television production. Founder Stu Levy said the company has 20 properties — live-action and animation — including Knockouts and Riding Shotgun. Both properties have videos on Tokyopop's YouTube channel. (Note: The latter video is not safe for work.) The company is also planning an anime review YouTube series.

Finally, the company announced that it is planning a "Pop Comics" iOS and Android app that lets users upload their own comics to share. Users keep the copyright and 100% creative control of their uploaded works.

Tokyopop shut down its North American publishing operations in May 2011. The company has since collaborated with Right Stuf and Gentosha Comics to release the fourth and fifth volumes of Hidekaz Himaruya's Hetalia manga, and has uploaded several titles to the Comixology digital platform.

Can we get some good older series? Like Escaflowne, Shaman King, or Slam Dunk?

Viz Media released Shaman King's Manga version. Probably still have the license to it, but not 100% certain. Slam Dunk was rescued by Viz and they released all volumes in recent years.

As for their Anime versions, Funimation has Escaflowne but used to have Shaman King before it got cancelled after just 2 Uncut DVDs. It was more of a 4Kids Entertainment DVD that Funimation distributed, so had Dubtitles like the Yu-Gi-Oh! Uncut DVDs which only lasted for 3 volumes before they got canned as well.

Slam Dunk's Anime was released very recently through Cinedigm/New Video Group(but this company usually only uses the English dub, so have to be a fan of English dubs).

The best thing TokyoPop can do is jump back into the hellpit they originally fell into.

I'd like it if they could re-issue the Boogiepop Phantom manga. I was browsing Amazon the other day, and didn't really feel like buying used (or new volumes from several different sellers). First world problems, I know.

Edit: Nevermind, I seem to have mixed them up with Seven Seas.

I didn't even realize that they went out of business lol. I always found their releases to be higher quality then viz. I think I still have my Sgt. Frog mangas lying around somewhere.

Having Borders going out of business, was a big factor of Tokyopop going under. Though things were bad with them even before that, but I think that was the final nail in their coffin. But they were not going to give up even after going out of business so became a very small company and is trying to go back to being the company they used to be.

IIRC, the main thing that led to Tokyopop "going under" was Stu Levy being Stu Levy. He just simply said "I'm done with this." The guy has like never made any sense.
