I didn't want to, but I'm sure I'm going to end up picking this up at work tomorrow. It's going to be staring me in the face the whole 8 hour day.

I'm glad to hear that AVC is looking great on BD... Hopefully the next wave of Buena Vista BDs will all be AVC, and I also look forward to seeing the FOX movies in AVC. I just need Sony to switch to AVC, which will in turn probably bring Lionsgate and Paramount into the AVC mix as well. Sony's excuse was that MPEG-2 is more mature, but other companies are cranking out AVC titles that look great, so why not give it a try and become better as time goes on.

Glad to hear we have another winner disc available. I also share your enthusiasm over the improved releases lately. I've been waiting to hear comments like this about BD since June and now practically every release coming out is wowing people.

This at times has that looking out the window look. I can say this is as good if not better then tears of the sun, It has a styled look kinda like making it look in the 40's but damn it looks awesome,

Kevin, not doubting you, but some people are calling it soft.... I watched about 15 minutes of Eight and it looked soft compared to Tears. Im starting to beleive the NR chip is the cause of these inconsistent reviews. I know you have the new player which is probably deactivating the chip... Im gonna try again to swap this out.... I really wish someone could get a hold of both players to shed some light on this.

Who in the world is calling this soft? I said before there are movies i watched before and now they are even better. I also will say it again turn on any NR causes problems. If they are they have a bias and no matter what blu-ray looks like they will cricize and there are many reviewers doing this.

The reviews of this disc convinced me to order it as well. I had previously rented the DVD and thought the film itself was okay but not great. Ah well, this HD addiction of mine wins again.

Since I'm still in rental mode (chalk it up to the dozen or so DVDs I have to watch and review this weekend), but I took some time tonight to watch all of the Great Raid after checking out the opening five minutes on Thursday night.

Wow. Great film, solid WWII material about a particular area that I've admittedly heard little on. Not an A-list actor line-up but all very solid performances and the type and look that really makes you feel like it's that time period.

Naturally, we're here for the technical side of it. If this is soft than I fear some sharp shows. It's obviously not "HD video" but it looks great throughout but isn't problem free. The black and white footage from the archives looks amazing and I don't really have any "quality" issues with it since you know what the source is like. I found two areas that gave me pause during this. The first is a panning sequence from right to left of the area I believe just outside the camp, as the soldiers were moving in, it had some very slight shudder to it. I've seen it in DVD and broadcast and it's over in like 2 seconds. But it stood out amongst the rest of the quality. The other area that looked truly bad is during the scene where the daylight slowly turns to dusk across the horizon before the raid. You can see the color gradients in the skyline easily and it's blocky, but as it finishes out there's that line of purples and blues and blacks there that just macroblock like crazy. Or maybe someone can give me the better term, I figure posterization is what it is. It stood out really badly. But again, on screen for five seconds at most out of a two hour movie.

No complaints here. This is a great looking piece. Your average HD consumer will love it. Your more serious types will find some minor flaws. Your fanatics will find it not to be HD DVD quality - whatever that means.

That does sound like posterization, like the fade up/out on Corpse Bride and the beginning of SWAT.

I haven't picked this up but have been toying with the possibility.

Glad you liked it. I am not going to let like you sat 5 seconds ruin a movie. some will call it horrable because of this 5 seconds and the rest of the movie is tottaly forgotten.

A long day of children at home has left my brain cluttered. But yeah, there's basically that one moment of posterization in the film but otherwise it looks great. I'm sure someone will step-frame through it and find flaws. I've done all my reviews over the years as being done via "normal playback" since some anime folks do step-framing to find flaws that justify their not buying the product.

I do feel the issue is worth pointing out but it's something where anyone calling it a dealbreaker has to be called on the carpet for it. If that's a deal breaker, how did they ever live through DVD? Or broadcast TV for that matter? Every visual image must drive them nuts because it's not pristine 100% of the time.

The majority of people who go into this movie and see it on Blu-ray will have zero issue with it.

It really is amazing how good it looks, theres a few shots that look like it is live hd. Some will use this like a certain reviewer and say this is another blu-ray failure.

Of course, now that you've mentioned the two flaws you spotted, I'll be looking for them, too! Thanks!
