NOSFERATU Remake in the Works with THE WITCH Director Robert Eggers

Quote:
One of the best films I saw at Sundance this year was a horror film called The Witch. The horror genre isn’t necessarily my specialty, but the premise sounded interesting (it takes place in Salem, a generation before the witch trials) so I gave it a shot and came out the other side wholly and utterly terrified (read my review here), due in large part to the work of director Robert Eggers, who took home the Best Director U.S. Dramatic prize at the end of the festival. And now it appears that Eggers may work his dark magic on a horror classic: Nosferatu.

Per Deadline, Studio 8 has set up an untitled remake of F. W. Murnau’s 1922 silent film with The Witch helmer Dave Eggers onboard to write and direct and Jay Van Hoy and Lars Knudsen producing. Further details about the take are unknown, but Murnau’s film was an unofficial adaptation of Dracula and revolves around the vampire Count Orlok.

Nosferatu holds up remarkably well so a remake really isn’t necessary—especially after the excellent Shadow of the Vampire—but what piques my interest here is Eggers. With The Witch, which A24 Films will release later this year, he showed a remarkable handle on atmosphere and tension. The film feels like it lives and breathes, and so the prospect of seeing Eggers tackle a classic vampire story is mighty enticing.

The filmmaker is separately attached to write and direct a medieval film called The Knight, also for Studio 8, so it’s unclear which is Eggers’ first priority. Either way, The Witch is going to make him a very in-demand director once it hits theaters, so I look forward to seeing what he takes on next.

But that one had Werner Herzog going for it.

Anyway, I'm not familiar with Robert Eggers' work so I can't really judge. Since Nosferatu was - as the article points out - an unofficial adaptation of Dracula, a novel that's been adapted countless times, yet another one doesn't really make a difference one way or the other. I'll give it a shot if it's well-received.

I'd like to hear who will be involved in this project before I make any judgement. Question is, who will play Count Orlok?

‘The Witch’ Director Robert Eggers Confirms ‘Nosferatu’ Remake Is His Next Film
Quote:
The writer/director behind The Witch has confirmed that his next film will be a remake of Nosferatu. Robert Eggers confirmed the news in an appearance on Indiewire’s Filmmaker Toolkit podcast, where he admitted that a remake of F.W. Murnau‘s 1922 horror classic—which has been in the works since last summer—was not what he intended for his next film.

“[It’s shocking] to me,” Eggers said on the podcast. “It feels ugly and blasphemous and egomaniacal and disgusting for a filmmaker in my place to do Nosferatu next. I was really planning on waiting a while, but that’s how fate shook out.”

Eggers had been a fan of Nosferatu since childhood, having been more accustomed to classic horror films from Universal and Hammer Studios as he was not able to handle scarier fare like A Nightmare on Elm Street. “I saw a picture of Max Schreck as Count Orlok in a book in my elementary school and I lost my mind,” Eggers said. He was so interested that he made his mother drive to the local mall in rural New Hampshire so that they could obtain a VHS copy of the 1922 classic. A few years later, at age 17, Eggers directed Nosferatu as his senior play, done in a German Expressionistic style similar to Cabinet of Dr. Caligari. That performance led to Eggers being recruited to re-stage the play professionally, which inspired him toward his later career.

The podcast, which you can listen to below, also features Eggers talking about how his obsession with history helped to guide the look and script of The Witch and how that will also inspire how he will be doing Nosferatu. He also hinted that he will change his approach to the film’s lead character.

“I can’t also do Max Schreck again either, so that’s fun, so it’s going back to the origins of the folk vampire,” Eggers said.

Robert Eggers’ take on Nosferatu is in development for former Warner Bros. President Jeff Robinov’s Studio 8.

While I think the odds of a really decent second remake of Nosferatu are remote, I'll gladly give Eggers the benefit of the doubt. The Witch was a terrific mood piece and like Guadagnino with the upcoming Suspiria remake, a good film is always about it's director for me.

Most fans are automatically primed to lose it with these announcements but I'll wait and see before making judgement. I can assure fans that back in the day the news of Carpenter remaking The Thing and Cronenberg remaking The Fly was met with similar derision.

Thanks to a director who can genuinely be described as visionary, I'm intrigued by this. Wasn't a huge fan of the rather static Herzog remake, so maybe this will work better.

There is a predictable knee-jerk reaction to remakes now, but we have to differentiate between a talented director remaking a film because it poses an artistic challenge and Michael Bay's sausage factory of crappy horror remakes.

Going by his attention to detail on The Witch, this can only be a positive.

Yeah, all for this, Eggers is interesting, story has a lot of gas in the can, and IMHO the Herzog film is a remake that actually surpasses the original. So it can be done twice, why not three times?

I don't have any problem with this. And Eggers seems a brilliant director who knows and respect horror (both as a genre and as an actual lore) inside out.

If Eggers ups, or even stays on par with, the creepy element he maintained throughout The VVitch, and providing that it has a decent story, it'll be a hit.

I doubt it'll be anywhere as great as Herzog's version (yep, that's my favorite one) - however, given that Eggers is behind this new one, it'll at least have a chance of having some artistic integrity.

Bring it on.

Thumbs up

nosferatu_salemslot.jpg

While it's tough to top the pure horror of that Salem Lot's Nosferatu's ghastly eyes and face, I generally liked Nosferatu 2024 in theaters and it's a good horror remake.

I'm really glad Nosferatu had a lot of dialog to round out his character and give him an actual personality. He's not just a monster on a boat, but has thoughts and plans. I also really liked his decayed features, suggesting he's deceased but persists long after his time was up.

The pacing was intentionally a slow build as with another remake, Nosferatu the Vampyre 1979. But this Count Orlock is not timid, but much more sinister and evil, more powerful.

And in the end, this powerful, long living vampire really was willing to
[Show spoiler]throw away everything to spend one night with a woman he was attracted to.

There were some moments where the acting felt a bit over the top, but I went with it anyway and enjoyed the film overall.

Nosferatu was indeed the main focus of the whole film, which was great. He was onscreen quite a bit, though usually in darker light due to his issues with sunlight. I do wish we got to see fangs, but here, he seems to have just sharp teeth. And he doesn't
[Show spoiler]bite the neck, but the chest, which seems like a less effective place to draw blood.

Nice horror soundtrack, photography/cinema, really good casting of Nosferatu. Good horror remake movie overall. I wasn't bored. Not scared, but I liked the horror aspects.

4/5

My only question that persists with this and even other vampire movies; if he bites a person, should that person, if they were spared from being drained fully, turn into a vampire in a few days and fear the light? There are
[Show spoiler] zero
people in this film who become vampires. I don't understand that.

Fine by me.

I love the Murnau film, the Herzog remake, Merhige's Shadow of the Vampire, and Eggers's Witch all fairly equally. I see no problem here.
