This is a pretty great film.
The comparisons to All the President's Men are a bit much, although I suppose that this might be the second best investigative journalism film, but it's still not even close to the same order of magnitude. The Michael Keaton comeback is indeed pretty sweet, and this is actually a great film to go along with it. Very depressing, though, in terms of content. Makes me glad I'm Protestant lol. Indeed, there are a few whose peak is later (look at Heather Graham, she looked way better in Boogie Nights than Twin Peaks). Although in McAdams case it may just be the further from The Notebook the better lol. |

Amazing movie... I was interested in the cast before I even knew what the movie was about, and I went in blind after receiving an invite from AMC to an early screening event tonight.
Weird thing was how few people attended for a free event.... Not too many AMC stubs people around Baltimore, or maybe touchy subject? In any case, great movie on an horrific subject, and it never tried to get too close to any one victim (with the possible exception of Rachel McAdams contact) so as to not fall into the crying game, but just like the journalistic investigators the goal really was to start with limited evidence to arrive at the big picture. If I had to find anything negative, I would say the dialogues felt a bit sub par, but are probably more realistic that way (as in: real life conversations aren't always terribly smart and full of wit). Acting was obviously a strong point across, with particular mentions to Keaton, Ruffalo and Tucci (Mc Adams and Schreiber were no slouches, but their roles were more "muted", I would say definitely by design). With little screentime, Jamey Sheridan (once known as Randall Flagg) was excellent as well. |

Saw this and thought it was really good, but a bit disappointing. Everyone was saying this thing could win best picture, but I don't see it. I thought the screenplay was fantastic, and the story was powerful, but that's what carries it the most for me. Thomas McCarthy's directing is raw, but the film isn't very visually appealing. I expected a bit more from the acting. Michael Keaton was really good, but nothing I haven't seen from him before, Tucci was fine, McAdams was fine, but Mark Ruffalo's performance was very odd. I don't know if it was the accent, but the voice he was doing was very distracting and his performance was really over the top, especially compared to the subtle acting in the rest of the film. However, who really impressed me, is Liev Schreiber, who is incredible. He should walk away with the oscar nomination. His performance is so subtle and naturalistic, his performance is perfect. Either way, I found the story to be very engaging, so I'd give it a solid 8/10. But I don't find it to be anything worth revisiting.

Saw this today, and loved it. One of the best releases of the year. Important, compelling, stirring, and essential film. Beautifully acted, and this better receive that SAG ensemble nom.
The actors portraying the victims of the sexual abuse deserve a special mention as does Tom McCarthy's direction and framing of their interview scenes. Felt like something out of a documentary with raw, heartbreaking authenticity. This is a can't miss. |

I think this is the first film of the year that you can guarantee is a lock for a best picture nomination. I thought it was excellent. It may not be AS good as All the President's Men, but it's almost up there in terms of quality. And the emotion was genuine without manipulating the audience.
I really hope Michael Keaton gets another nomination and continues on his comeback. I don't want him to go away doing Jack Frost again! |
