United Kingdom Shane (1953) Eureka

Release date: November 16

Quote:
One of the landmark and most enduring Westerns of the 1950s, George Stevens’ Shane struck a chord with audiences at the time of its release, and continues to influence admirers today, even as it served as a template for the series of groundbreaking spaghetti-westerns of Sergio Leone.

Alan Ladd plays the titular gunslinger, the archetypal “man alone" who wanders into town and shortly afterward becomes embroiled in a conflict between a group of Wyoming homesteaders and the nefarious cattle baron who has designs to wrest away their land. As the conflict escalates, and a romance develops between Shane and homesteader Marian Starrett (Jean Arthur in her last screen role before an early retirement from motion pictures), a who’s-who of studio system character talent revolves through the production — Van Heflin, Jack Palance, Elisha Cook, Jr. — before the proverbial ride into the sunset...

Writing in The New York Times in 2001, Woody Allen said: “Shane, I think, is [Stevens’] masterpiece. I’ve seen it many, many times. Certainly more than 20.” The Masters of Cinema Series is proud to present George Stevens’ Shane in this special edition, for the film’s first release on Blu-ray in the UK.

Original UK Theatrical Trailer https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JMYo...ature=youtu.be

- Optional English subtitles for the deaf and hard-of-hearing
- 24-PAGE BOOKLET containing writing on the film, archival imagery, and more!

That trailer link appears to play in 1.66:1 aspect ratio as it was shown in some theatres upon initial release. Is that what the MoS disc is going to play?

If you actually cared about this film you'd have already acquired the US release which came out over two YEARS ago on the Warner label, is region-free, has exactly the same solitary extra as this Eureka issue but cost £9 to import (including postage) as opposed to £16 to buy here.

Far from "Bravo" it's "Boo" to Eureka for yet another absolutely pointless and overpriced release.

If Eureka offer both 1.33 and 1.66 versions I suspect a lot of fans would find it worth the upgrade.

Why do people always judge on Amazon's initial price?

Anyway, if you already have and are happy with the US release what are you even complaining about other than for complainings sake?

The trailer link with the Eureka logo certainly plays in 1.66:1 and looks great. Although the blurb here for the Eureka release says 1.37:1, it also says that it has no reviews or screenshots for the release as yet. I already own the US release in OAR and so if the Eureka MoS one is indeed 1.66:1, it will be great for comparison.

Assuming you care about this film, you must already have it, no? So what's the point in being angry? It's not like you're losing anything. Anybody else's consumer habits are their own business.

That's me told, then.

I shall scuttle away to my 'don't really care about Shane' grief hole.

Sorry for sullying these forums, and indeed the planet, with my pathetic existence.

When I finally succumb to my inevitable, terrible fate, I'll do my best to ensure that Eureka/MoC are dragged down with me - the unworthy cretins.

Extras aren't always 100% confirmed on announcement, there's a booklet and new artwork, and who knows...the transfer might be even better. We don't know yet until the reviews come in, so no use speculating.

Yeah this is daft. £15.99 is the RRP price but I bet you it will drop to about a tenner like many of the recent Eureka releases. And then in 2 years (how long the Warner disc has been out for), even less than that, so will likely be the most affordable edition of this film on Blu-ray. Not that it matters - I really don't mind paying an extra quid or so to own the Eureka edition.

Hope you feel better having gotten that off your chest! There are a lot of region free blu's that I would like to buy, but I find that it's cheapest for me to import from the UK with the postage being a lot less.

Having said that, I would really like it if Eureka or Arrow released High Noon. I last saw that in the '80s and it really made an impact.

Does the US disc have more than one version of the film on it?

The review on here seems to imply the Warner presentation is Academy ratio, so 1:375:1...sounds as if that's the only version on that particular disc. Can anyone confirm?

Yes I have the US disc - the only ration on it is 1:37.

At least Jeff Wells will have been pleased! http://www.hollywood-elsewhere.com/2...atio-conflict/

Apparently this disc will have three different versions.

Yeah Kevin just said that, I was surprised to say the least. Would that be 1:66:1 and 1:85:1 as well then?
