Default New This Week: September 26th Edition

Due to the maximum # of 10 items in the poll, I dropped out Lethal Weapon 2 from the list, since it's both a dual release disc and one of the oldest titles on there. Just my own bias but unless someone has a better suggestion on how to do this when there are more than 10, let me know. (I run these weekly on my site and we have upwards of 30 releases during a week!)

I'll be picking up Corpse Bride, Sleepy Hollow, and Swordfish this week. I ordered Four Brothers and House of Wax, but they won't be here until Mission Impossible releases. I also clicked on Tomb Raider, but that's still a maybe.

BTW... I saw the Corpse Bride at Circuit City last night on the Samsung 61" 1080p DLP... It looked amazing. Very clean and the contrast between the blues, whites, and blacks was great. I'm really looking forward to picking this up on tuesday.

Corpse Bride- definite
Sky Captain, and Sleepy Hollow- possibly

As crazy as this sounds, I've started "phasing out" Warner HD DVDs from my library. I've sold a few on ebay recently and replaced them with their BD counterparts. I've done this for three reasons: 1) curiosity about BD PQ versus the HD DVDs, which is a complete wash, IMO; 2) believe it or not, I think the Samsung is a more stable player than the Toshiba, especially after Tosh's 2.0 firmware; and 3) if HD DVD should tank, I want the risk to be minimized because I made the switch from Warner HD DVD to Warner BD early in the game. In other words, I have a crisis of confidence in HD DVD at the moment.

I am considering doing this same "phase out" for Paramount. I have far fewer Paramount HD DVDs than Warner, so that should be fairly easy to accomplish. Going forward, I will most likely do Warner and Paramount BDs instead of HD DVDs. However, I am still very much in the HD DVD game, but only for Universal and other true HD DVD exclusives.

I've said it before that during the phase where the initial discs came out and we had no idea if it was the player or the discs, I was concerned about the Samsung. But in between using it and the Toshiba, I generally prefer the Samsung. I've had little love for Toshiba's players since their first DVD player that I tried out back in 97. They were also the buggiest back then as well from what I remember back on DVD Resource. I'm glad the player does as well as it does and it certainly had the advantage of regular updates to the firmware. But as you said, the WB discs are basically identical and I expect much the same from Paramount. Since I'm going to be buying Disney and Fox discs as well as Sony, I might as well keep my library growing there for WB and Paramount as well. The Toshiba is basically a place for me to rent from netflix for the occasional Universal flick I want to see. I can play the waiting game just as much as they can. Hell, I could just go back to DVD for them if I really didn't want to bother with the HD DVD player and just have one unit. The discs would look mighty fine - not the best - upconverted.

BTW, Chris, slightly off-topic, the Burlington Tweeter told me they'd have 82 Panasonic players in their Canton warehouse on 10/6. It can be preordered as late as 10/5, and then physically picked up in Canton on the 6th. Tempting.

Wow, that's a surprising amount for Tweeter. I'm so very tempted but I'm going to play the waiting game this time. I'm not as nervous abou the Samsung as I was so I don't mind waiting a bit and letting others do the sampling this time. Definitely looking forward to your report on it though cause I know temptation will have you pretty well

As long as the Panasonic actually arrives before Oct. 14, I'll give it a try. If not, I'll probably end up keeping the Samsung. As much as I'd love to get my hands on that Panasonic, it's kind of hard justifying the huge leap over what I paid for the Samsung. Is the potential for upgrading to Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD MA really worth the extra 600 bucks?

Stop it, damn you! I'm trying to be rational and sane about this, and you're encouraging the madness! Oh, well, I could always blame you when the wife finds out.

Trust me, my name is legendary for being used in that manner because of what I've done with my site over the years. "I used to watch my anime on VHS but now I have a 73" TV set and all this gear... plus hundreds more DVDs!"

I get scowls and slaps when I appear at conventions.

Okay, Jeff's picture is funny.

If you guys are teaming up on me, you want to split the cost of the Panny three ways? We can do a timeshare deal.

Jeez, I get home from work and what should I find in today's mail? A 10% off coupon from Tweeter, of all places. One step closer to that Panasonic.
