I'm not sure I could live without the 3D of Pacific Rim, but it's such a sharp, colourful movie that the 2D UHD version could kick some serious ass.

I feel the same. The 3D version of Pacific Rim is pretty much my current definitive way of watching the film, but I'm feeling that even though this'll be 2D it has the potential to look pretty damn amazing.

well I already have the 3D version on blu-ray, and I bought it exceedingly cheap, so I'll have absolutely no qualms about buying the UHD version when it comes out.

To my eyes the 3D Blu-ray is one of the best ever released. Could be tempted with this at some point but not on day one.

One of few films I think will definitely look great on UHD. It's the sharpest blu-ray I own.

btw, I know this has a 2K DI, but the original capture was all done with a RED Epic in 5K.

It shouldn't be difficult at all for them to produce a proper 4K master, since in theory the computer could apply the same coloration and alterations frame by frame and output in 4K. The only real question is what resolution was the CGI rendered at, and can it be rerendered at 4K.

Is it easy to re-render the CGI? Yes.

Is it cheap, or quick? No.

In fact, as a point of interest, the reason that Oblivion got a 2K DI and not a 4K one wasn't a money one, but a time one - they simply couldn't get the VFX done quick enough for release.

This film is at least new enough that it is possible someone will have all the files needed to do it in higher res, but it'd take some serious investment.

I wouldn't be surprised if something like Ridley Scott's The Counselor got a proper 4K release before The Martian, or Prometheus - its very VFX lite. Hell, it'd be easier to give Blade Runner or Alien or Thelma and Louise a 4K release than Prometheus.

Agreed, re-rendering the VFX for most big-budget bonanzas these days would take some doing. Not saying it couldn't be done, but the market just isn't big enough to warrant such large-scale investment in UHD rebuilds - yet.

Then again, if something finished @ 2K ends up looking almost as good as the real thing thanks to a professional upscale + HDR + wider colour volume + increased bit depth, then why even go that extra mile for full 4K? It'll be VERY interesting to find out what the initial reaction to all this 2K upscaled UHD stuff will be.

Blade Runner Final Cut and Alien were both redone in 4K several years ago so they're good to go!

At least some of The Martian was rendered in 5K so it should be ok.

I expect some of the initial releases will feature upscaled VFX.

It will also be nice to hear the original Dolby Atmos soundtrack.

Since Warner is not going to re-render its 2k rendered effects in 4k (That would cost tens of millions of dollars its not going to happen) so I don't understand why anyone would want this

Seriously I can't believe Warner's first 4 UHD titles are all 2k mastered 3D movies. In other words ones that can only be a downgrade on this format. Why not release Interstellar? No 3D and completed in 4k yet not among the announced titles

While I would love to see true 4K masters for these films and for ANY UHD Blu-ray title, this is a title that I'm excited about anyways. For one it should be a true showcase for HDR and I bet in a side by side comparison the differences would be MASSIVE given the bold color palette. I bet even side by side without HDR the wider P3 gamut the UHD Blu-ray will have won't be subtle compared to the BD. Add to that the Atmos soundtrack and you have a pretty good chance at a substantial upgrade over the Blu-ray. I watched the Vudu UHD stream of Edge of Tomorrow today. It is upscaled to 4K (2K master) but it has P3 color and Dolby Atmos, both of which my system does 100%. The difference in picture over the Blu-ray is NOT subtle, much cleaner, crisper and the colors look fantastic. Add the killer Atmos soundtrack and it walks all over my Blu-ray version, which was great already.

Pacific Rim is a reference quality blu-ray. It was sharp and had beautiful scenery and colors. It will be dropping draws in 4k HDR. Too bad part 2 got scrapped.

Day one for this one! Such a fun movie, even with mostly bland characters and a story that's not very well executed. The action is great, the cast is fun (Charlie Hunnam was a bit wooden, IMO, but still like seeing the guy get work) and I'd love for them to put out the sequel they keep "on again/off again".

interestingly Warner's DCP of '2001' when compared to the bluray looks like utter crap; a proper remastered 4K of this (... and 'Blade Runner') would be icing on the cake. [oh and 'Speed Racer' ]
