Default The Best of Mel Gibson

The American born, Aussie raised star has seen his ups and downs, been at the top of Hollywood's Leading Man list and hit rock bottom as well, but over his career he has been in (and directed) some of the most loved pictures of his generation. So which is "Mad" Mel Gibson's best performance?

The Candidates

The Beaver (2011)
Signs (2002)
We Were Soldiers (2002)
Payback (1999)
Ransom (1996)
Braveheart (1995)
Maverick (1994)
Hamlet (1990)
Lethal Weapon 2 (1989)
Lethal Weapon (1987)
Mrs. Soffel (1984)
The River (1984)
The Year of Living Dangerously (1982)
Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior (1981)
Mad Max (1979)

To Keep at a hefty 15, some outstanding performances did not make the cut such as Gallipoli, The Bounty, Tequila Sunrise, Air America, Forever Young, The Patriot, etc.

For me it comes down to a three way battle royale starring a trifecta of the deadliest heroes of modern cinema, Max vs. Riggs vs. William Wallace. This is also a solid showcase of different chapters of Mel's career, albeit all action heroes in their extraordinary way. Max and Wallace were definitely violent saviour types, one in black leather and the other in a kilt. Braveheart is an amazing achievement both in front of and behind the camera while the Mad Max films are THE benchmark for post-apocalyptic action. That being said, Lethal Weapon (and the sequel) IMO is the best of the buddy cop films and arguably best action film of the 80s, which means a lot. Riggs was the perfect vehicle for Gibson, the lost, lone wolf, on the edge, volatile, daring, quick witted and genuinely good-hearted hero looking for his purpose/direction and a little love/family/acceptance, while killing dozens of bad guys in increasingly spectacular fashion along the way. It's just so damn fun. Maybe not all that original, but nearly perfected. So my vote goes to Sgt. Martin Riggs....by a thin margin, anorexic even.

Nice on the thread here, glad to see some appreciation for Gibson. Braveheart is my favorite of his as well as my all time favorite film. Lethal Weapon 2 probably would be second. Great actor and good director to. Stallone had talked to him about directing an Expendables film.

Lethal Weapon is number 1 in my book. He's done some other very good movies, but Lethal Weapon is the best for me.

I haven't watched many films with him as an actor, but he has directed movies I've enjoyed like Apocalypto and The Passion of Christ.

Lethal Weapon is probably my favorite movie, while Payback is my favorite performance.

love most all of Mel's work--

BRAVEHEART is his masterpiece though and my 2nd favorite film of all time.

As for the dumbass comment a few posts back (his absence)..................

since the MODS added a "thanks" icon to pick, can we get a "thumbs down" icon as well for comments that we hate?

That's a good idea on the thumbs down option. Like you like most of his work, can only think of one or two that I don't like much. Thought he did a good job in The Man Without a Face.

Braveheart is a great movie and I think that's my favourite of his as an actor but you can't mention Mel and not give at least a mention of Apocalypto and The Passion of the Christ.
