The trailers haven't done a good job of selling the movie. Every ad I've seen in the last week is basically "Scenery... starring Leonardo Dicaprio... and then a bear attacks". Complete fail on the marketing department. I'm thinking 10 to 12 opening weekend, with TFA repeating at around 60.

Seriously? I'm surprised to see people react this way. The film has been getting fairly strong word of mouth from both critics and audiences plus, even in limited release, it's been doing good business. Also, Leo one of the few stars who can still pull in a crowd (Tom Cruise being the other). It's got the R rating going against it for sure, but I can see it opening decently at 20 to 30 million.

Man, maybe my group of friends is just different, but The Revenant is all of our most anticipated movie of the year (2015). We've all been dying waiting for it to come out. I think it's going to do extremely well.

The Revenant $15 million
The Forest $10 million

I really don't understand Fox's reasoning for putting The Revenant in 3,000 theatres. Sure, it will make money (it is a DiCaprio movie) but will wider audiences go for a two and a hour-plus period film from a director who's never had a big box office hit (Birdman only did $40 million even after its awards success) that looks like one of those History Channel "documentaries"? Also, I feel that the (untrue) rumors about Leo being raped by a bear in the film might have killed its chances at mainstream acceptance.

The Forest, meanwhile, could have been a contender (with its PG-13 rating and unique for American, non-remake horror Japan setting) but Focus/Gramercy isn't really pushing it. Maybe Krampus fulfilled parent company Universal's need for a Winter horror hit?

I'm really shocked some people are predicting really low for The Revenant. I won't even be surprised if it does 40+ this weekend. I don't really think audiences will be all that crazy about it so WOM will be mixed but I do expect people to see it. That's why Fox is going so wide. This isn't something to slowly expand. It will be strong right out of the gate.

After it leaked way before it came out. I wouldn't be surprised if it under performs.

Not really. While it would have done great that frame was way too crowded and not easy to get screens. Plus I doubt Fox wanted to go up against themselves with Joy. This puts it a little farther away from the Star Wars release and it's a fairly weak month.

And movies leaking online early rarely even make a big difference.

Revenant should be good for at least 35 Million with that, if not 40.

The Revenant is looking to beat Star Wars on Friday with 13-16 Million. Star Wars will obviously win the weekend though with big family business on Saturday.

I want to see Revenant and Forest double-team SW to take it down under $50 million this weekend. Keep those legs wobbling until they fall off completely.

Yeah chop those suckers off like they were attached to an AT-AT walker! Going to do my part and go to Mockingjay 2 again tomorrow and then another Jennifer double feature on Sunday, not like my team's playing anyway.
