Default UHD BD: No Region Coding

Quote:
First though, I have key bit of UHD Blu-ray news for you: I’ve confirmed with both studio sources and the UHD Alliance that Ultra HD Blu-ray will not employ region coding or region locking. This means that, no matter where you live on the planet, you should be able to import UHD discs from overseas with ease (the only catch being the available language and subtitle options on the title). That’s great news for consumers and it represents a big shift from current DVD and Blu-ray. More on that in the weeks ahead. Meanwhile, let’s get back to those press events…

Excellent news!

In Samsung's UHD Player manual also confirms no Region Codes.

About time! This is how it should have been all along, region locking has been one of my mist hated things for a long time. From video games to Blu-ray.

Good to know I'm not going to need to mod or buy two players.

Excellent news. It's HD-DVD all over again. Only hopefully with a happier ending.

Wonderful news, if true.

Pieter are you sure that manual isn't counting "UHD" as a Blu-Ray disc. After all, on the left it says "Blu-Ray Disc" and UHD is called "UHD Blu-Ray Disc" on the right.

This is excellent news. Unfortunately, I don't think I'll be buying much UHD BD. But I digress. Carry on.

Will players still be locked for BD/DVD playback, though?

that's what it looks like. The manual says that the BD and DVD regions will be stamped on the back of the player.

I think that's a virtual certainty.

Awesome news. Now if a release I want is only coming out in a certain country its far less of an issue

On another upside, this MAY also mean that they're going to be rolling these off in a single production line, and the region coding for BD and DVD will be purely firmware based, and thus easily defeat-able.

I am very, very pleased to hear this but even more surprised. Considering how some film studios appeared to balk at the lack of coding on HD-DVD - yes I'm looking at you Fox - this is very surprising.

Very excited for 4k now.
