For my eyes AVC is the one. MPEG2 seems ok but i tend to notice a lot of noise when its used. I'll take the AVC VC-1 challenge any day, i can spot VC-1 a mile away. (and not in a good way).

I think you mean CODEC's. The three common ones are
MPEG2 - least compression requires a large amount of bandwidth and hence storage space
AVC - Seems to be preferred by Blu-ray studios
VC-1 - Seems to be preferred by the HD-DVD studios and those that are neutral.

Each CODEC has it's advantages and disadvantages but at the end of the day the more bandwidth the less compression which makes for a better quality picture. Blu-ray supports a very high bandwidth 40Mb/s for the video stream and of course lots of storage.

Simply put, Mpeg2 is old (though all US HDTV is broadcast by means of Mpeg2). Mpeg 4 is a new standard better suited to the high def arena. It has features which make it perfect for high quality HD compression. VC1 is a codec made by Microsoft that requires more overhead processing power than Mpeg 4. It also compresses video into smaller files (which is not beneficial in my opinion). VC1 actually contains the base of mpeg4. VC1 is about the only thing that allows movies to fit on that other disc format. Like many things they do, they say VC1 is good enough. Look these on wikipedia for more info.

just wondering this noise means ???

so picture quality wise, are all three close to eachother ???

if it were ranked it would probably be like mp4-avc, then vc-1, then mpeg2 ???

so for playing video files on ps3 ??? which of the three would be the best to convert too ???

Thus far I've preferred AVC encodes, having said that this it's almost impossible to do like for like comparos since the only studio that I've really noticed using VC-1 is Warner and they obviously have to limit their file sizes/bandwidth.

It's pretty tight, but thus far releases like Oceans 13 etc always seem a tad washed clean, lacking a certain fine detail or grain where you'd expect some.

Heh, way too many variables though including transfer and the encoding process itself.

Actually I've seen a few good MPEG-2 encodes too.

okay thannx for all the feedback

hope i can ask this question

i want to watch a video file on my ps3, but i need to convert it.

i have the 3 choices. the vc-1 and mpeg2 increase the size, but the mp4-avc decreases the size of the file ???

is the compressed mp4 still a better PQ than the other two ?

and which would you guys do ?

with enough bitrate, all 3 will look the same.
mpeg2 need higest follow by vc1 by avc.
vc1 and avc are both 'spin-off' based on mpeg4 standard.
mpeg2 and mpeg4 standard are defined a long time ago.
mpeg4 original design is for mobile video application as it is able to compress video to a very small size.

AVC, I think & most other Blu-ray fans do to, is by far the best in terms of PQ. The 'other' guys use VC-1 which is inferior IMO...

VOB is the DVD container file that holds MPEG-2 video and the soundtrack

I doubt that. You can spot an HD DVD crippled compression, but I doubt you can spot an uncrippled VC-1 vs AVC a mile away. There's great jobs like Dave Matthews or Deja Vu that are perfect and VC-1

ohhh okay understood

i guess ill stick with just making mpeg2 since theres hardly a difference with vob or mpeg4-avc.

the vob in my opinion looks better than the mpeg2 but when i convert it, it has sync issues when i try to rewind fast forward or even stop and resume the file.
