Default Galaxy Quest theory

Maybe this is is known and I just don't know it...

But after watching Galaxy Quest again last night (only maybe my 3rd or 4th time watching it, I only bought it within the last couple years for like a dollar) I've come to realize maybe it was orriginally intended for slightly older audiences, not a hard R or anything, but at least PG13 and got edited down to be a kids movie.

Evidence: Tony Shalhoub's character is clearly a drug addict. Or at least a huge stoner. Note through the first half of the film he is just super spacey and mellow. When they all get transported through space and are freaking out he's like 'that was cool'. And every time he communicates with the captain from the engine room he sounds super stoned and slow. There's the group hug moment during one of those scenes. Then there's the scene where he has to teleport Tim Allen up to the ship and his demeanor changes drastically... he is very anxious and adamantly self loathing. Characteristics of a heavy drug user on a come down. And within this scene the captain is giving him and inspirationa pep talk and the conversation itself sounds broken and in the cuts Shalhoub goes from in the back of the room to up in the middle surrounded by all the rest... whats there is a "you used to be awesome dude" then it sorta jumps to "and thats why I know you can do this" sort of vibe but it feels like theres a "but" missing. As in "you were grat back in the day but then the drugs took their toll but i still believe in you" and all the friends that have ignored the problem are there like yeah we're here for you buddy. For the rest of the film he seems happy go lucky, but not spaced out and dumb.

Evidence 2: Then the thing that clinched it for me... go back and watch the part where Allen and Weaver are going through the bowels of the ship and get to the obstacle course part with the big smashing pistons... Sigourney Weaver's audio says "SCREW THIS!!!" but if you watch her face yo can CLEARLY see her mouth is dropping the F bomb.

So... are there deleted scenes (I guess I could have checked the special features) or older drafts of the script that are more raunchy? Am I just picking up on something that is well known in movie circles? Or am I on to something?

Also funfact:

theres a story out there somewhere about Patrick Stewart being sort pissy about the movie when it came out thinking it was basically a jab at him and his friends but went to see it on the down low and almost got kicked out of the theater for cracking up so much.

I cannot believe any cinema on the planet would almost throw Patrick Stewart out for laughing at a comedy too much.

Similar situation to Red Dwarf then, he gave an interview once where he said he caught part of an episode one evening and saw it as a Star Trek rip off so was about to call his agent when he saw something that made him laugh so he carried on watching it and became a fan.

This. It's not just a theory. It's true. Galaxy Quest was originally intended to be an R-rated comedy/drama for adults. I'm not sure exactly what spurred the sudden change, but during production it was decided to play up the humor, tone down the seriousness and remove the darker elements, and market it as a family film. Back around the time of the film's release it was well-documented in various interviews with cast and crew.

Stewart himself said that in an interview. He had originally not wanted to see it because he thought it was making fun of Star Trek, but then Jonathan Frakes told him "You have to go see it. You'll love." So Stewart went to the theater on a Friday night, saw it with a packed house and said he probably laughed the loudest.

It would be cool if they had filmed some of it and there was a directors cut!

Either you haven't seen Half Moon Street or you have a thing for blondes.

I have not seen Half Moon Street. I am not actually too into Blondes...at least not extensively. I just thought she was gorgeous in this.

Indeed!
She's pretty cool too. I like her acting choices. I also thought she was hot in Working Girl, even though she was a beeatch.

I thought when the movie came out there was talk of an unrated cut being forthcoming, but it never happened. Now after Alan Rickman passing, maybe someone will finally make it a reality.

According to Weaver via producer Lindsey Collins, it's true:

Quote:
We had lunch with Sigourney [Weaver] who was telling us that there actually used to be an R-rated version of that movie which was awesome. It was the director’s cut and it was R-rated and everybody was swearing and there were sex scenes, and the whole thing. They didn’t know what to do with it, so they had to re-edit the whole thing and made it what it is today. We were like, ‘How do we get our hands on the R-rated version of Galaxy Quest?’ She said ‘I don’t know!’ and we were like, ‘Come on, Sigourney!’
The Oral History of Galaxy Quest is a hilarious read, too, where they talk about it a little bit & explain why Weaver's uniform is ripped open at the end. And there's this gem:

Quote:
Allen: I bugged the s–t out of Sigourney with something from “Alien” that I bought. A plastic, thermo-cast relief and I annoyed her to death to sign it. She kept saying, “of course I’ll sign it,” but the movie was getting close to wrapping and I really meant it. I had to beg her. I had to put my foot down and say, “No, you are going to go back to New York and I’m going to have to fly out this f–king piece that’s on my wall.”

Weaver: He had this piece of the wall of the Nostromo or something, and he was so proud of it. I wrote on it: “Stolen by Tim Allen. Love, Sigourney Weaver”

Allen: She eventually signed it with a smart-ass comment.

Weaver: He was so upset. “Why would you write that?! I was going to put it in my screening room!” Which was such a Hollywood thing to say.

It's been awhile since I've watched them, but I think the deleted scenes include the bit where she unzips to distract the aliens.

I think the movie is pretty perfect the way it is and works great as a family film, but I'd like to see the original R version just out of curiosity.

He definitely seemed like a huge pothead stoner...cause he is eating/snacking constantly in the film.

Love this thread, btw!
