Default FOX's "The Exorcist" (Season 2)

Quote:

EXCLUSIVE: As we mark the 40th anniversary of William Friedkin’s horror classic The Exorcist this year, a TV series take on William Peter Blatty’s best seller is brewing. I hear Morgan Creek, which has the rights to the property, is shopping an Exorcist drama series penned by hot young feature writer Jeremy Slater. I hear there is interest in the project from broadcast and cable networks. Roy Lee, executive producer of The Departed and The Ring, is set to executive produce. Last year, Morgan Creek and Lee shopped an Exorcist limited series project with a different writer, Sean Durkin. I hear Slater’s is a brand new take on the material. On the feature side, UTA-repped Slater penned the upcoming Fantastic Four reboot and has been tapped by Warner Bros. and David Heyman to adapt graphic novel Fables.

Keep in mind, the studio is just pitching this to the networks. A Pilot may never even be greenlit.

I think to do this right, it needs to be done on basic or premium cable.

I think you are right about cable. Although Criminal Minds freaks me out every week with some of the stuff on there. FX should buy it and pair it with American Horror Story.

The only way to go with this is to have it as a limited-run premium cable series starring Lancaster Merrin. If they are smart, the first episodes could have von Sydow, and then they could flash back to other events with younger actors.

If this is on a network or cable, I probably won't be watching.

Default The Exorcist TV Series on its Way? Hot New Writer Developing 'The Exorcist' For TV

Quote:

The Exorcist TV Series on its Way?There's no question... The Exorcist is one of those rare movies that was so revolutionary and good that it became the measuring stick for all possession films after its release. That being said, it's only a matter of time before someone remakes it. Speaking of which...

Deadline is reporting that a TV series take on William Peter Blatty’s best seller is brewing. The site reports that Morgan Creek, which has the rights to the property, is shopping an "Exorcist" drama series penned by hot young feature writer Jeremy Slater, and there is interest in the project from broadcast and cable networks. Roy Lee, executive producer of The Departed and The Ring, is set to executive produce.

You may remember that last year Morgan Creek and Lee shopped an "Exorcist" limited series project with a different writer. Slater’s is a brand new take on the material.

Stay tuned, kids... and say your prayers!

A true cinema landmark, the theological thriller is one of the top ten box-office performers of all time. The Exorcist took 10 Academy Award® nominations, including Best Picture, and won two Oscars® for Best Adapted Screenplay, as well as winning for Best Sound. Subsequently, the film went on to become a multi-million dollar franchise. Directed by Friedkin (Oscar®-winner for The French Connection - Directing 1971) and written by William Peter Blatty, the film is based on his best-selling novel, which sold nearly 13 million copies domestically and was the #1 book on the New York Times Best Seller List for 57 weeks, 17 of them at #1

I hope this will happen & it will have good story-telling!!

It's going to deal largely with Regan's school life and any time a fellow student tries to harass her for having a celebrity mother, Pazuzu possesses her and kills the bully. I think it'll be a hit.

Default More on The Exorcist TV Series Comes to Light

Quote:

More on The Exorcist TV Series Comes to LightEarlier this week we told you about the rekindling of a proposed TV series version of The Exorcist. We did a bit of digging and have brought back some info regarding this year's current pitch along with last year's! Read on for details.

"[Writer of last year's pitch] Sean Durkin was never under contract on 'The Exorcist' TV project," says a source very close to the project whom we can confirm as rock solid. "Producer Roy Lee and Morgan Creek didn't shop the concept until this year - earlier reports were inaccurate. In 2012, Durkin was approached by Lee to prepare an Exorcist pitch to go to networks. Durkin strung them along for months - and when he finally delivered his pitch, it was inadequate. In the interim, Durkin prematurely told Vulture he was to direct an Exorcist mini-series before Lee had hired him or he had delivered the aforementioned pitch. Durkin was in Europe working on Southcliffe at the time and had spent no effort on it, and although the producers had hopes for the award-winning filmmaker, Lee and Morgan Creek had too look elsewhere."

"On the other hand, the word is that the Exorcist pitch package developed by new Fantastic Four writer, Jeremy Slater, is amazing - I understand Morgan Creek is very impressed with Slater's grasp of the project and has the utmost confidence in him.

"Also early speculations that discounted William Peter Blatty as supportive of the television show have been widely exaggerated. The origin of Blatty's negative response in 2012 lies in Durkin's premature announcement. When Durkin made his initial comment to Vulture, Blatty had not been notified of the series in development yet. Blatty's knee-jerk reaction was to deny the show existed - it wasn't Blatty's fault. It wasn't seasoned to confer with Blatty yet. Since, Blatty has met with all interested parties and is very excited about the prospect of a series even meeting with Lee and Morgan Creek President David Robinson to show his support."

Stay tuned, kids... and say your prayers!

I thought this was dead in the water?

Maybe I'm thinking of the subject of a film remake where Friedkin said he didn't want to see it remade and Warner Bros. followed up by saying they never would.

Fox on the other hand...

I remain interested in this, but it seems a risky venture.

Sounds interesting. Hopefully each episode includes a confrontation with evil to keep things exciting.

More I hear about it (which isn't a great deal), the more I wish they'd leave it alone.

However, if indeed it goes ahead and is done well, I wouldn't mind seeing more of the psychological mind games between Father Karras and the demon Pazuzu. In the book, where he attempts to ask her questions so he can have evidence that she's speaking in a language she couldn't possibly know only for the demon to do it, then later retort with a chuckle that she was reading his mind. Then the later realisation that Regan had been aware of basic French words etc. That was always my favourite part of the book. The interplay. The movie glossed over that a little (though understandable).

I haven't read the books.
It could work if they have a new person each few episodes get invaded and taken over by the demons in the series Exorcist. Hopefully they go for the make up effects of the original Exorcist, which were the most disturbing IMO.

I wonder how far they will be allowed to go in terms of the content - namely that crucifix scene. Maybe they'll just take the characters and stray from the book and make it its own thing.
