Criterion The New World (2005)

Restoring The New World

Quote:
With the Academy Awards coming up on Sunday, we’re celebrating the breathtaking work of cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki, who is nominated this year for his work on Alejandro González Iñárritu’s The Revenant. If he wins, Lubezki will be one of the only cinematographers to ever take home the Oscar three years in a row, following his wins for Gravity and Birdman. In honor of that, we’re giving you a rare glimpse through Lubezki’s talented eyes, an opportunity to see what the raw original negative of Terrence Malick’s 2005 film The New World, one of the cinematographer’s most beautifully lensed films, looks like before and after color correction. Lubezki and Malick have been working with Criterion for more than a year to create a new 4K restoration of Malick’s preferred 172-minute cut of the film, and these brief, never-before-seen examples show the incredible difference between the look of Lubezki’s meticulously exposed camera negative and that of the finished film.

So same cut that the original disc had. That's too bad, I prefer the shorter cut (135 minute version).

They're confirming a lot more of their titles through blogs than in the past. I'm looking forward to giving this one another chance. Saw it in theaters and didn't care for it much, but I didn't "get" Malick then, and to be fair I still don't completely.

Same here. Never made it through the cut released on blu-ray, it seems to go on forever.

It's possible they'll also include the shorter cut.

Just saw the email about this. Haven't seen this since DVD days, been wanting to give it a rewatch since someone mentioned it'd make a good double-feature with The Revenant.

Make it a triple feature with Apocalypto

I'd love to see the LA/NY festival cut (150 mins.) and later theatrical cut (135 mins.) in addition to the longer cut already mentioned, all in the same package. Even just the theatrical cut as well would be terrific.

The one Malick film I've seen that leaves me feeling a bit cold and underwhelmed.

...still a very good movie.

Man, I still need to sit down and watch the rest of this someday. I only caught the first hour but what I saw was one of the most beautiful (emotionally and visually) films I've ever seen. Here's hoping this release contains both the theatrical and extended cuts.

This was my favorite film of 2005 when I saw it. The first Malick film I was old enough to catch in the theater at the time and was absolutely gobsmacked by it's beauty and sense of detail and ultimate catharsis of sorts in the role we played in providing that singular counter-culture that would eventually change the very fabric of the men, women and children who were native to the land before the the ships landed in Virginia.

Of course, it takes liberties with history (and what film doesn't?) but what beautiful liberties they are!

I don't care what cut is included here. 4k restoration of the masterful work, released by Criterion. I'm buying regardless of the cut. I just need this film on Blu. Counting down the days.

And for the record, I do like the 135 minute cut of the film the best but I also like the 172 minute cut as well. In a weird way, I can't feel the time difference between the two. That's how much I tend to get lost with this film. It starts and I'm pretty much at its mercy, no matter the length. Now and forever, my favorite Malick film.

It's raw, low contrast, ungraded scan. Raw scan is not supposed to look pretty just to capture as much information/dynamic range as possible.

Fantastic news! Hoping for some nice extras and at least one alternate cut.
