What mean pricing compared to the territories that have the Rathbone box set.

Yep. For £40 I got the set from Germany. Just over 3 quid a movie. A bit better than this deal, and that's presuming they bother with the others.

The best version of the Hound of the Baskervilles was the 1959 version with the two legends Lee and Cushing but might pick this up its ok.

Will this be a newer restoration as compared to the version on the Basil Rathbone Sherlock Holmes Collection?

That's what I'm wondering, too; no mention of a new restoration so far, and I'd think considering how good the MPI collection looks, it would need to be all over the media to sell this one.

The only thing that gives me hope is that the packaging for the MPI collection says The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes and The Hound of The Baskervilles were not restored by the UCLA Film & Television Archive... so, maybe...?

I wonder if SC is releasing the Sherlock Holmes titles one by one. That would be very expensive, compared to the MPI set...

As I posted in the news article comments. For those restricted to RB (as the MPI release in US is RA locked), you can buy when they are on sale the German and Spanish complete boxsets of all 14 Rathbone films for a similar price to what Studio Canal want for one !

Regarding restorations, UCLA only had access to the masters of the later 12 Universal films hence those look so good. I believe MPI may have done a limited amount of work on the first two Fox films (Adventures and Hound), but these are definitely not at the same quality level as the Universal films.

I suppose it depends if Studio Canal has had access to decent masters of the Fox films and then paid to restore them.

When they were released in the UK on DVD by Optimum (which Studio Canal traded as in the UK at that time), the consensus was that the Optimum DVDs were inferior to the MPI versions. I believe they did get access to the UCLA restorations, just did not apply them to DVD as well as MPI.

Sherlock Holmes fans should note that the long unavailable Ian Richardson Holmes films are being released on blu-ray soon. These were made for the BBC in the early 80s, but after only two were made, the series was scuttled to clear the way for the Jeremy Brett series.

They weren't made for the BBC, they were made by Tarzan producer Sy Weintraub and Otto Platschkes as part of an attempt to start a Sherlock Holmes TV movie franchise before Granada killed the project when only two films were in the can by making the Jeremy Brett series after he'd paid a small fortune to the Conan Doyle estate for the rights. Saddled with two suddenly hard to sell properties, Weintraub ended up making his money for the two films in an out of court settlement with the Conan Doyle estate and they made their debut on home video in most territories.

The BBC had already done their own version of The Hound of the Baskervilles the previous year.

They're both pretty decent films, though curiously there's a different Watson in each. Though Richardson was even better as Joseph Bell in the short-lived Murder Rooms than his very satisfying stab at Sherlock here.

This is currently £15.99 on Base if you pre-order. Might be keeping an eye on that. I know that Amazon will drop their price at some point, but I'm not sure if they price match Base.

Amazon almost always end up at £15.99 for pre-orders of the Studio Canal vintage releases. However you do need to pre-order as after release they let the price increase to over £20 pretty quickly.

Oh, I'm aware of this, I was commenting more on how I don't know if they price match Base or not. I've pre-ordered on both and will see what happens closer to release date.

Amazon don't price match Base.com

The only companies they "unofficially" price match are HMV and Tesco, but both for pre-orders only.

I think Studio Canal really try it on with prices.

Can anyone who has actually has the Studio Canal disc comment on the PQ (preferably in comparison to the MPI disc)?
