Paramount Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan (1982) (Director's Cut)

Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan Blu-ray

full info on Star Trek 50th anniversary on The Digital Bits http://www.thedigitalbits.com/column...ts/031816_1400

Quote:
Now we’re here and I’ve got a few details for you on what Paramount is actually doing with their Trek Blu-rays this year. I don’t have all the details, but I have the important ones for you. As is so often the case, there’s good news and bad news. The good news is that the studio did actually take my advice. The bad news is... they only took some of it.

Here’s what’s great: Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan is getting remastered again in full 4K. That remaster will be released on Blu-ray this year and it will include both the Theatrical Cut and the Extended Cut of the film. Director Nicholas Meyer has been involved, as you know from his recent press statements, and there may also be a 4K Ultra HD release this year, though that plan is not yet set in stone. Star Trek: The Animated Series is also coming to Blu-ray in time for the holidays. As you’ve also probably heard, both Star Trek (2009) and Star Trek Into Darkness are getting released this Summer on 4K Ultra HD format, and likely Star Trek Beyond will too later this year. There will also be a variety of Trek Blu-ray and DVD combo packs and box sets, in various configurations, all branded to the Star Trek: 50th Anniversary. Some may have new bonus content and might include new swag.

Paramount Announces STAR TREK II: THE WRATH OF KHAN Director’s Cut Blu-ray Replacement Program

If there's a demonstrable increase in PQ, I'll buy it. Pretty much SOP.

The entirety of the Star Trek news was about 10% good and 90% bad though. They chose to do a remaster of the one that needed it the least, and no plans for any others to be remastered (they will just repackage the same turds), the Motion Picture Director's Cut, or any current plans for DS9 or Voyager.
Happy 50th!!

I do hope they'll do a re-grading of the color. Many scenes in the last WOK disc have a sickly green veil to them.

I'm sorry, I'm reading that whole article in the link and I don't understand why Paramount needs Mr. Hunt to advise them what to do.
Don't they know themselves what to do?

It’s October 2015. I’m contacted again by Paramount Home Entertainment to advise more new people at the studio about what Trek fans want from Blu-ray and what fans would consider a great way to celebrate Star Trek’s 50th Anniversary. And I told them all the same things again. So far so good.
By the way, I don't agree at all with his advice to them to create all new special effects for some films.

Pssh. The sad catch 22 about all of this is, if they'd remaster all of the original films, it would be a money-maker. But they're unwilling to do it because that's not seen as a money-maker. So they'll keep repackaging the same releases which...isn't a money-maker.

I was hoping for a remaster of all of them as well but i will still pick up WoK for the Director's Cut. I will then put it in the steelbook that came out last year.

People at Paramount home video don't necessarily know anything about the films that Paramount has released. Why would they? They got hired for having business degrees.

Sounds like when he was invited around to give advice a second time, there was again mostly new people working there.

I'd buy it and stick the disc in my Original Movies Collection box set.

Folks here are talking about the current execs at Paramount not even knowing their own product. I don't doubt that, as many man on the street interviews show that many people don't even know who the VP of the US is, and the sad thing is that many of them probably voted for the guy.

does anyone really think that PARAMOUNT will not eventually release all of these films remastered on the 4k format?

It's just a matter of time..... (if the format takes off of course....)

Paramount has been a piss-poor studio when it comes to Blu-ray in general. They never really got on board with the format compared to the other studios.

Ok, it's just that when someone has an argument against how a bluray looks there are people in forums arguing back saying
"do you think the people in the studio don't know? etc." so I thought eventually that in the studios there are actually people than know their work.

There has only been one instance where the home video dept. at a major studio was run by a film enthusiast - that was George Feltenstein at Warner. I'm not sure what his position was but under his watch movies were treated with respect and care on DVD. Their TWO-DISC SPECIAL EDITION line was one of the best specialty lines ever created - everything was released in beautiful gatefold packaging that had original theatrical poster art and extras were plentiful. Even regular titles were given very good treatment. A film like HE KNOWS YOU'RE ALONE would NEVER have gotten a commentary track today, let alone a standard MOD release. Those days are sadly behind us.
