Post Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978) (Collector's Edition)

https://www.shoutfactory.com/film/fi...ctor-s-edition

Hell yes!

Quote:
*NEW TITLE REVEAL!**
We're thrilled to start the month by announcing that the classic 1978 INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS remake will be getting the "Collector's Edition" Blu-ray treatment! Street date is August 2nd.
Specs and extras (both new and existing) will be announced sometime in June. The newly-designed front-facing artwork you see here is final (not pictured is the reverse wrap image which will showcase the original theatrical poster art.)
Quote:
Synopsis

"A science fiction horror fable… it may be the best film of its kind ever made!" – Pauline Kael, The New Yorker

Under cover of darkness, while an unsuspecting city sleeps, an alien life form begins to sow the seeds of unspeakable terror. Donald Sutherland, Brooke Adams, Leonard Nimoy, Veronica Cartwright and Jeff Goldblum star in this shocking, "first-rate suspense thriller" (Newsday).

One by one, the residents of San Francisco are becoming drone-like shadows of their former selves. As the phenomenon spreads, two Department of Health workers, Matthew (Sutherland) and Elizabeth (Adams), uncover the horrifying truth: Mysterious pods are cloning humans — and destroying the originals! The unworldly invasion grows stronger with each passing minute, hurling Matthew and Elizabeth into a desperate race to save not only their own lives, but the future of the entire human race.

I was right with my MGM CE upgrade prediction then. Will probably be Child's Play next month.

Not a fan of the art I have to say (the template looks much too familiar), but if it features a new transfer I'm in.

It would be cool if the original United Artists logo was intact on their edition. It was on the old DVD release but replaced on the U.S. and UK Blu Ray editions.

Just noticed in the specs this will apparently only one disc, which surprises me given that the current release is pretty stacked (and also because all of Scream's MGM CE 'upgrades' so far this year have been two-disc affairs).

I can't see any improvement in a new release. The quality in the previous/presently available one is extremely good - in fact, better than what I saw in the theater in theatrical release.

There are so many other titles that haven't see the light of BD I'd rather see being done.

Me too. I don't really see the point of this release. Unless they did some sort of restoration or remaster.

The transfer for Body Snatchers '78 has always had that gritty look, which I always thought could be improved upon. If Shout is able to do a new scan like they've done with ROTLD and TCM 2 this will be totally worth a double dip. Not sure what else they can come up with for extras but a new 2K or better scan alone will be worth it IMO.

I haven't seen the original, but I doubt it can top this one. A really great film, and one of my very favorite sci-fi and horror flicks.

Very interested to see what SF will bring to the table.

I wish they'd release the original (NO EXTRAS) or the 93 version (NO RELEASE) instead. :/ Re-releasing the one of the three that already has multiple good releases out there is taunting us!!

They'd have to come up with something earth-shaking to give this a point beyond the two versions I already own. In the small event someone out there doesn't have it, though, they need to get it. Easily one of the very best horror/sci-fi films of all time, and definitely my favorite of the three versions, though all three are extremely good. The '93 one is not talked about very often, for some reason. I was hoping someone would release it after Gabrielle Anwar became a cult figure thanks to Burn Notice considering she's about 20 and naked in the 93 one, but no dice. It's a damn good version of the story and similar to the 78 one, it actually does something new with the premise.

I rarely disagree but you really need to see the original, superior version; you will also have to set your mind to 50's commie/McCarthy era thinking and also being able to appreciate black and white cinema.

The biggest thing that kills the original for me is the horrible ending. It's down there with Psycho, maybe even lower. The 78 one, on the other hand, has one of the best endings of all time.

I love love love this 1978 version of Invasion of the Body Snatchers, and I rank it as one of my all-time top five horror films.

I'm hard-pressed to imagine how the video presentation on the current MGM Blu-ray can be improved upon, but I'm still going to buy this Scream Factory Blu-ray on day one just to show my support for this awesomely underrated flick.

you might be interested in knowing that the original INVASION ended with the scene of Kevin McCarthy screaming warnings on the highway to everyone driving by. It was considered too downbeat at the time and the coda scene at the end basically telling everyone that "everything will be OK" was added after test screenings...

I think the original is an excellent film and a classic but I agree that the '78 remake tops it!

Yeah, I'm familiar with that story, but it doesn't change the fact that the ending that's in there blows. I was even thinking it was studio-mandated for violating the code or something instead of a test screening thing.
