Default Winner sooner rather than later?

Interesting thoughts here:

http://www.afterdawn.com/news/archive/12206.cfm

It would certainly be nice to see this war end so we can all enjoy our Blu-ray movies from Paramount, Universal etc...

They're not predicting which one format will win, they're just saying one will win?

That's rich.

The kind of crap some people get paid for...

Their report was more certain when it comes to gaming consoles where they predict Sony's PS3 will see big sales growth and become serious competition for Xbox 360 from Microsoft and the Nintendo Wii.
PS3 sales growth = Blu-ray sales growth

So put 2 and 2 together.

As we all know here, it'll be Warner that will decide things. If they go Blu at CES, it'll all be over but the fine details of the total surrender. As I and others have also said, it would also be far better that it end as quickly as possible. Predicting that it will end by the conclusion of next year isn't in anybody's best interest. Blu is not going to lose, and Red owners certainly should be spared the agony of buying another year's worth of disks that will be obsolete.

It's just another opinion. It means nothing.

Come on Warner, end this thing in January.

Just be patient because it'll be over sooner than we think. It's a slow process but it'll pay off big time in the end. Does anyone remember the previous format war between VHS vs. Beta? VHS is Blu-ray and Beta is HD-DVD

Question Sabotage in 2008?

I was probably the first to say that this indefinate stalemate hurts both sides and may ultimately result in the demise of both formats. See the letter in my signature.

But I don't see Warner going BD exclusive any time soon. They already show signs of giving us better audio to go with our capacious BD50 discs, but no signs of exclusive BD formats. Still getting the HD DVD left overs in that respect.

Aside from sales and great BOGO deals, both sides have been quite. Rest assured they are loading up "The Enola Gay" to drop some big ones in the new year. With Paramount under contract Toshiba can justify one more year of stubborness. If Warner goes camp blu, Paramount will be the stick in the mud until the end of 2008.

Be certain of this much, if anything happens next year to make the situation worse, consider it a direct act of sabotage. I know I will.

2 of my freinds back in the 80's had Beta VCR's and they always kept telling me that the Beta picture looked better then VHS. I also remember the only place they could find Beta movies was threw Columbia House as none of the stores near us had Beta movies. I think Sony was the only one making Beta players? Was it JVC that made VHS? I still recall my first VHS player it was a Radio Shack brand and I think my dad paid $400 for it?

Your friend must have had a very keen eye. Beta reportedly only had 300 lines of reolution compared to 240 for VHS. Considering TV resolution was 480i, BOTH formats sucked.

Twenty years from now, on the Virtual-Reality.com Forum, are you going to then tell us that Blu-ray sucked?

Yeah, sure, why not? No really, since distinguishing 720p and 1080i is already hard for some people, higher resolutions are just diminishing returns. 1440p for projectors would be nice because it is so easy to blow up the picture.

Unless something really spectacular happens to MAINSTREAM TV in the future, BD will always be a nice viewable "non-sucky" format. But I'd like to live long enough to hear some young nose wipe say it and give him a piece of my mind.

All this talk reminds me of the last Monday's Journeyman episode. He goes back in time to 1984 and drops his brand new digital camera. And it gets found by someone at a tech company. When he comes back to the present. Computer tech is years ahead of what it is now.

Yeah... that was a good episode. I like Journeyman. I think I heard it's going to be cancelled though (not enough people like it, I guess).

When people talk about the resolution of Beta or VHS, they are referring to horizontal resolution.

480i refers to vertical resolution, which is not the same. Both Beta and VHS had a full 480 lines of vertical resolution; it was horizontal resolution that they lacked.

480 lines vertical? SDTV is 720 lines vertical, and I heard VHS only supported half of that. Too much conflicting data. At this point all wee need to know is it wasn't FULL resolution.
