It was three years ago that Lars von Trier dropped his two-part "Nymphomaniac," and after releasing the picture, the director focused on his next project: himself. The filmmaker started going to AA and cleaning up, however, he feared that not being under the influence would diminish his creativity, and suggested he may never direct again.

“Who the hell cares about Rolling Stones when you don’t have a sense that they’ve just emptied a bottle of Jack Daniels? That’s nonsense," von Trier said in 2014. "Or Jimi Hendrix without heroin or whatever he was on. That’s rubbish; we can’t be bothered with that. We don’t want that, because we want their special approach through something mysterious, which is still somehow connected to various intoxicants, right? But when I work, I’ll miss the intoxication, or rather, I may come to miss it. That’s the point. I think it’s really dreary to try to be sober. But I am.”

Well, von Trier is ready to work again, and on Friday, he hit Facebook at announce his next gig.

This fall, the director will start shooting "The House That Jack Built." Previously announced as an 8-part television series, it would seem the scale of the project has been slimmed down, but it has a premise that is no less intriguing. The story follows a serial killer, but from the murderer's point of view. The plan for the TV iteration of the project was to land a big, international cast, and I would presume for the feature version, that's still the goal. Either way, we're glad to see von Trier headed back behind the camera.

Watch his announcement video below, which concludes with a brief tribute to David Bowie (you'll recall that the artist's "Young Americans" played over the end credits of "Dogville" and "Life Of Mars" was featured in "Breaking The Waves").

As long as he doesn't go Antichrist on me again, I'll give whatever he does a shot.

Lars is controversial and that's what I like about his films. Also the cinematography in his films are beautiful.

Making art is therapeutic for him. So people are actually giving him purpose by supporting his films. Otherwise he'd just be another drunk sitting at home and not working.

I hope the titular 'Jack' isn't the main character, and Charlotte Gainsbourg plays the serial killer.

She'll probably get a role regardless, but this would have potential at possibly topping her career best - as well as one of the best performances from the previous decade - in Anti-christ.

I thought Nymphomaniac was fantastic, Melancholia was great and Antichrist was good, a bit slow, but decent.

Lars Von Trier Sets Matt Dillon As Jack The Ripper, Bruno Ganz For ‘The House That Jack Built’

EXCLUSIVE: Matt Dillon will play notorious serial killer Jack The Ripper in The House That Jack Built, the next film for director Lars von Trier. Dillon will star with Bruno Ganz, the first castmembers that the filmmaker has divulged as he puts together the picture. Ganz will take on the role of a mysterious figure named Verge, who engages Jack in a recurring conversation about his actions and thoughts.

Said Von Trier: “It’s with great pleasure that we have succeeded in being able to present Matt Dillon and Bruno Ganz as the lead actors in The House That Jack Built. The two gentlemen have each figured as milestones in my cinematic development. Besides being an epochal match, they are excellent actors and fit quite organically into “my cinematic family.” I look forward with pleasure and pride to working with them both.”

The House That Jack Built follows the highly intelligent Jack over a span of 12 years and introduces the murders that define Jack’s development as a serial killer. We experience the story from Jack’s point of view, while he postulates each murder is an artwork in itself. As the inevitable police intervention is drawing nearer, he is taking greater and greater risks in his attempt to create the ultimate artwork. Additional cast, including 4 prominent female roles, is to be set soon. Shooting will take place in Trollhättan, Sweden and Copenhagen, Denmark.
