Blue Planet the BBC series narrated by David Attenborough is not out on Blu-ray. Blue Planet the IMAX production is. They are two very different things. The Former is an excellent nature doc about the Ocean's, the latter an overview of the planet itself.

Rented from blockbuster, I just attempted to watch this on my htpc, and it seems that it might have bd+ encryption. Just like with Die Hard, the disk would not play on powerdvd ultra.

Figure I'll bring this thread back from the dead

Any rumors anyone has heard about The Blue Planet (series not IMAX) coming out on Blu-Ray? Planet Earth is one of my favorite Blus and I'd love to get its equally awesome predecessor...

If you mean Blue Planet: Seas of Life, I am waiting for an upgrade too. No word yet that I know of.

Again, bringing this back from the dead... I want to buy this series, but really dont want to buy the DVD if there is any plan on releasing it on BD...
Any ideas if it is going to be released on BD?
This is referring to the David Attenborough narrated BBC series...

I think this series, along with all of the Life series, even the last one, Life in Cold Blood, broadcasted in 2008, was shot on standard definition. Chances of a blu-ray is probably slim to none as the source material simply isn't there. And in case anyone is wondering, the same probably applies for the Walking With... series.

I know this is an old thread, but, after watching Planet Earth on Blu-ray, I've been curious as to whether Blue Planet would be released on Blu-ray as well.

Amazon.com does have a page listed for it to be released at some future time:
http://www.amazon.com/Blue-Planet-Se...4836630&sr=1-1

But, I'm wondering if that actually means anything.

I've registered in this site just to answer this question, which sounds a bit crazy, but let me inform you guys about a thing I've just discovered. I've had the chance to own the new series of Life made by BBC in blu-ray and watch the first dvd of the BBC blue planet given to me by a friend and what I sow confirms that the blue planet was filmed in at least HD quality (if not FULL HD). Again, what I sow on life first episode first 5 minutes were the dolphins on hunt near the cost of Florida (yes, the circle trap), the same video, the same dolphins were also in blue planet dvd (In the first episode also the first 5 mins if I remember right).

I guess it is possible some day to watch Blue planet on HD, its just a matter of time, Because the BBC people are not stupid, the BBC earth is more than a media company, its a foundation based on discovery and exploration (the same as national geographic) and they definitely will use any new technology as a benefit for the present and a future proof including the HD technology which is by the way a veeeeery old technology (we know just what they offer for us on the market).

I want to mention here that the price of these series on the market is just symbolic IMHO comparing it to the real cost and effort of their realization, so its a shame for those who are searching for a free pirated download.

Also I'm waiting for the release of blue planet in blu-ray to complete my collection, so maybe I'll be back for reading or writing info about it. See ya (and sorry for my bad English ).

What I've read is that Blue Planet was mostly shot on Super 16 film, so what they basically need to do for a Blu-ray release is to re-transfer and re-edit everything in HD (as they did with some of the shots for the dolphin sequence mentioned above).

Underwater/sea life is probably my favourite type of wildlife documentary, so I'm also hoping we'll see it soon.

I would bet they are working on it right now.

As others have said, it wasn't filmed in HD, or at least not most of it. So it's very expensive to re-format, and takes a very long time. There's a lot of footage, so if they are doing it, it will probably take a while. But I'll buy it for sure.

"Narrated by Pierce Brosnan and Sir David Attenborough, this eight episode series takes viewers on an epic journey, revealing everything from exotic coral reef spectacles to never-before-seen things that go bump in the dark depths of the ocean floor. "

I'm in Australia, stores now sell DVD version only as it is from the BBC.It is not easy to find DVDs & Blue rays from Discovery Channel, which makes me wonder why.Life in blue ray will be on sale next month in Australia, however, for Blue Planet,Guess I still need to wait for couples of months.

So is this newly announced Discovery channel release the same that was released on DVD now for some time? Did they change the narration or the order of things? I for one am ordering the Attenborough version of Life rather than Oprah. I would also much rather have Attenborough on my Planet Earth than say Mike Rowe.
