Default What's the max no of speakers that current receivers support?

The most I see is 11? So if one wanted to get around 14-17, would that be possible? Will you have to buy an external amp and connect it to the receiver?

Yes the maximum number of speakers is currently 11.2 which is plenty and more than enough for home theater. More speakers than 11.2 is a overkill. A person must have an enormous room to accommodate that many speakers, depending how big they are.

I was thinking of adding two more speakers above the side speakers and perhaps in in the center of the ceiling.

Yes. From viewing your dedicated HT, (which is very nice) you have the accommodations for a Dolby Atmos and DTS-X 11.2 or a 9.2 speaker set-up. You may have to upgrade your receiver to a Dolby Atmos / DTS-X 11.2 capability. There are cheaper Dolby Atmos receivers that are 7.2, but you will compromise and lose the surround back signal, for the 2 Atmos speakers instead.

Iirc you have to bump up to a very $$$$ pre/pro (if we are talking separate channels) like datasat or Trinnov altitude.

People are hoping for a avr system that can run 9.4.2 but who knows when that will come out.
