From Blu-ray.com's Sunset Song review of the American theatrical release, by Brian Orndorf, June 2, 2016:

Quote:
"Terence Davies doesn’t make movies very often, but when he does find time to pursue his cinematic vision, it’s usually a special event. Following up the domestic drama “The Deep Blue Sea” with another take on household intimacies, Davies brings Lewis Grassic Gibbon’s novel “Sunset Song” to the screen, which provides a special adaptation challenge as it details prolonged tragedy and hushed introspection, supported by a thrilling widescreen filmmaking event. Sensitive and true to the human experience, “Sunset Song” is best reserved for those who enjoy getting lost in a literary-inspired world, populated with defined characters and a vivid sense of location. The picture is evocative and beautiful, but also richly pained, with Davies finding a way to execute a simple tale of growth with sophisticated emotions.

In pre-World War I Scotland, Chris (Agyness Deyn) is the daughter of John (Peter Mullan) and Jean (Daniela Nardini), and sister to Will (Jack Greenlees). Living on a remote farm, Chris keeps to a routine of hard work and disappointment, trying to make the best out of a difficult situation as John unleashes abusive behavior on his kids, while keeping his wife tied to motherhood as the household welcomes twin boys into the family. Tragedy is common in the area, challenging Chris to keep her emotions in check as she remains tethered to gender expectations, soon emerging as the sole heir to the family property as the years pass, investing in love with neighbor Ewan (Kevin Guthrie), who’s capable of providing the tenderness and support she’s been craving for most of her life...."
