Smile Magnolia Jumps Into Blu-ray with 'Bubble'

Psst! Magnolia Jumps Into Blu-ray with 'Bubble'

Quote:
"With little fanfare, Magnolia Home Entertainment has jumped into the Blu-ray format with its first release, Steven Soderbergh's 'Bubble...'

Magnolia previously announced support for the HD DVD format in April of this year..... However, those releases never appeared, which makes the almost covert appearance of the film on Blu-ray a bit of surprise."

Great. Maybe that means I'll finally be able to pick up that Enron movie-- many months after it was first due to be released, and on a totally different format! Gotta love this format war!

Blu-ray is getting top heavy with all this studio support! I love it!

I hope Anchor Bay will come on board with Blu-ray next. I would love to see the 1st and 2nd Hellraiser movies, Children of the Corn, and Halloween (the ones that they have) on Blu-ray. Blu-ray demos have been shown with Ghost in the Shell. Ghost in the Shell belongs to Anchor Bay. We might here something about that soon.

Magnolia Home Entertainment has quietly stepped into the Blu-ray camp even though they had previously pledged HD DVD support and released the film on Blu-ray last Tuesday.

Magnolia previously announced support for the HD DVD format in April of this year, pledging an initial slate of three theatrical titles that was to include 'Bubble.' However, those releases never appeared, which makes the almost covert appearance of the film on Blu-ray a bit of surprise.

We hope to have more details on 'Bubble,' as well as Magnolia's future Blu-ray and HD DVD plans soon. Also look for a review of the disc in the coming days.

In the meantime, we've added a listing for 'Bubble' to our Blu-ray Release Schedule. Stay tuned!

From Home Media Retailing.com. We already knew about "Bubble", but the others (and their release date) are news to me:

Magnolia Launches First Blu-ray Slate

Posted: October 9, 2006

Magnolia Home Entertainment has announced its first wave of high-definition titles. The distributor will bow six Blu-ray Disc releases Oct. 10.

The titles from HDNet television include Bubble ($29.98), a 2005 film by director Steven Soderbergh about three Midwestern factory workers whose lives are changed by a local murder; Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room ($29.98) a documentary about how top executives at the infamous Houston utility company profited despite its spectacular fall into bankruptcy; and The War Within ($29.98), which explores the transformation of a Pakistani man into a suicide bomber and his moral dilemmas. This title includes audio commentary by writer-director Joseph Castelo and actor Firdous Bamji.

Also on the slate are Bikini Destinations: Triple Fantasy ($26.98), which showcases beautiful women in exotic locations; HDNet World Report Special: Shuttle Discovery’s Historic Mission ($26.98), featuring coverage of the spacecraft’s 2005 launch, including footage from Mission Control; and the 2005 comedy One Last Thing ($29.98), starring Cynthia Nixon (“Sex and the City”) and Sunny Mabrey (Snakes on a Plane), featuring interviews with actors and director Alex Steyermark.

Los Angeles-based Magnolia is scheduled to bow a slate of films in the rival HD DVD format in November.

Wow, they completely jumped ship, only a few months after announcing support for HD DVD. The HD fanboys over on that other forum must be choking there hearts back down from their throats over this.

Don't forget that if you want Magnolia to do more BD releases, you gotta support them by buying a few titles. Independents are more sensitive to sales than big studios.

So, what would be a good title to buy from them? Unfortunately, I'm looking at the titles and nothing really seems very appealing. I mean, except Bikini Destinations. But of course, that runs a million times on HDNet as it is. Has anyone seen Bubble? Is it a good film? I believe I recall seeing the trailer for One Last Thing on HDNet. That's the one about the kid that's dying and wants a date with some supermodel, correct?

I thought about it, but, like I said, it runs on HDNet a millions times already. I went for one last thing - at least that has a hot girl in a Bikini on the cover; good enough for me.

I haven't seen it in years since I dropped DirecTV awhile back. I'd love it if they'd release an old HDNet show called Hotlines on BD. That was a terrific show!
