Talking I Just Had to Share This Hilarious Story - My Mother Confused "Room" w/ "The Room"

Long story short, my mother likes watching critically acclaimed films (nominated for OSCARS) and wanted to check out Room.

She goes on Amazon and orders The Room on DVD not realizing what movie it is and that it came out in 2003. She calls me and says that she and my dad sat down for their movie night and both couldn't believe that this film received all the praise it got.

I asked her what it was and she goes, "It was The Room, it had some long haired French guy," and I couldn't stop laughing for like 20-mins. straight. I'm shocked that they actually sat through the whole thing. So I then ordered her the real Room.

She's not the only one. I was talking with another person who had the same issue and I told her that it was bound to happen.

I think I also remember reading somewhere that Emma Donoghue had never heard of The Room until after her novel was published.

You can't really blame her with several titles having very little difference from one another.

In this case it is Room and The Room. While the more technically savvy lot might double check on Imdb etc, it can be harder for older people.

This. My mom came home one day with a rental from Redbox. She had wanted to see Jack the Giant Slayer but hadn't realized she'd gotten Jack the Giant Killer (the cheapo rip-off by The Asylum) instead.

My dad put Exodus on his birthday list, the Paul Newman, Lee J. Cobb one and my sister bought him Exodus Gods and Kings. He didn't have the heart to tell her.

In the UK, The Avengers was called "Avengers Assemble" so as to avoid confusion with the British TV series of the same name. The name hasn't been changed since.

Urgh...

That's hilarious! I feel bad for your parents though that they wasted money on something they didn't intend to watch all because of a title mix up. This thread could become stories of other similar titled movie mix ups!

You just inspired me to pitch "666 Room" to The Asylum. In the time I took to write that first sentence, I already finished the screenplay, cast it and we're filming it tomorrow.

I remember having to look up a horror film for work called The Beast of the Alamo and the search came back with "Did you mean: The Best of Elmo"?

The weekend that Room opened at the arthouse theater here in town, they had midnight showings of The Room. I have to imagine that at least one moviegoer bought a ticket for the wrong flick.

There's an independent Horror/Drama titled 'Room' that I like very much. It was released just a couple years after 'The Room'. I was actually unaware of The Room or its infamy, until friends and I realized (after about 5 minutes) that we were talking about different films when I asked them if they had seen Room.

I still haven't seen the newer film with Brie Larson, so every time someone mentions it, I still have brief flashes to the earlier Horror film before realizing what they're talking about.

Yeah, that's exactly why they do that... I think Disney had an issue with them doing it before and sued them over title infringement or something.

They need to make a film where the people in the Room watch The Room for 7 years straight.

I think titles they were forced to change were American Battleship and Age of the Hobbits, but Atlantic Rim seems to have other titles so I'm not sure about that one. But The Day the Earth Stopped, completely acceptable despite threat of legal action which never happened.

Yeah I've seen people trying to rent Transmorpers at Blockbusters years ago. I had to stop them and ask if they knew what they were grabbing. Turns out they wanted the real movies (Transformers) which was still in theaters. Crazy some people see a trailer for a movie saying in theaters now and yet they think they can rent it from Blockbuster at the same time.

The sucks about The Room and Room mixup. Sad that such a terrible movie and amazing movie share a name and will confuse people.
