Default Wicked (2024/2025)

The long-awaited “Wicked” movie adaptation will be released on Dec. 20, 2019.

Stephen Daldry is directing the big-screen adaptation of the hit Broadway musical for Universal.

The Tony Award-winning stage musical was adapted from Gregory Maguire’s bestselling novel by book writer Winnie Holzman and Oscar-winning composer/lyricist Stephen Schwartz, who are also collaborating on the screenplay adaptation.

“Wicked” is produced on Broadway by Platt, Universal Stage Productions, the Araca Group, Jon B. Platt and David Stone.

The original Broadway production about the untold story of the Witches of Oz starred Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth.

Hmm, I'm not big on this -- unless the cast really sucks me in -- but I agree it will be huge. This is exactly the sort of flick that will draw in massive crowds.

And in musical film adaptation tradition, about a decade late.

No kidding. What the hell took them so long? Now the actresses from the original production are probably too old to do the bigscreen adaptation.

My assumption is that it might have something to do with clashes with Warner Bros (who own the 1939 Wizard of Oz) over the appearance and depiction of certain characters, sort of like the issues Disney had when making Oz: The Great and Powerful.

Most stage to movie musicals don't use the original cast anyway. I only saw a Canadian touring production and the cast was great. I'm sure they will be able to find younger performers who will do this justice.

I really wish they'd make this a straight dramatic version of the book and not a musical film. There's so much story in there that was dropped for the musical stageshow.

I'm honestly asking as someone who knows pretty much nothing about this whole thing, but wasn't the musical really popular?

Yes, but the book was extremely popular in its own right.

No chance of the original cast returning? Hard to imagine.

It's about time they finally gave this a release date. Universal first announced the movie back in 2008 or so, and Daltry was hired to direct maybe a year ago. Like everyone else is saying, this is going to be massive. I wouldn't be surprised to see it become the highest grossing movie musical of all time (not adjusted for inflation, of course. Nothing will ever touch Sound of Music's crazy adjusted gross).

Assembling the right cast for this is going to be key. Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth are obviously too old for their original parts, but Chenoweth has expressed interesting in playing Madame Morrible. I can see Menzel making a cameo during the opening flashback as Elphaba's mother. The possibilities for this film are endless, and I really hope they take full advantage of the cinematic medium, creating an experience you can't duplicate theatrically.

I want Kristen Bell in this in whichever role she'd fit in. I desperately want her to do more live action musicals. She has a great singing voice. Her Funny or Die Mary Poppins was awesome and she blew me away with her voice work on Frozen and in Reefer Madness: The Movie Musical. I really, really hope she can get a role. If she doesn't get one in this then she needs a role in a musical soon (not counting Frozen 2).

Agreed. She just needs a new agent because she really should be getting better roles. She'd absolutely kill in a live action musical. I mean she already has, but bring on another!

I agree. But she killed it in Frozen, and that was huge.

Oh she did, but it would be great if she had a role in a big musical where you could actually see her.
