I just learned that one of my favorite films is coming to BD in two weeks from Kino Lorber.
![]() It's a brilliant portrait of the Cuban Revolution, with a fantastic sense of place, even though it was actually shot in Spain. Steven Soderbergh writes lovingly of it in his book on Richard Lester. There's already a German regionless BD, but I'm definitely picking this one up too. https://www.amazon.com/Cuba-Blu-ray-...dp/B01EB5QH3I/ |

Sadly, no. He retired in 1989 after one of his close friends, the actor Roy Kinnear, who appeared in most of his films, was tragically killed in an accident with a horse on the set of his film THE RETURN OF THE MUSKETEERS. Paul McCartney coaxed Lester back two years later to do the documentary GET BACK, but other than that, he has not worked since. A great loss to cinema, but it's his choice and I respect it.

![]() Quote:
I particularly love Brooke Adams in the film. She's tough and independent, and doesn't give a damn if Connery loves her, which only makes her more attractive. In his book, Soderbergh says her performance, which he also loves, is "not ingratiating", which is a brilliant way to put it. This is the book I keep mentioning, BTW: ![]() https://www.amazon.com/Getting-Away-...dp/0571190251/ Last edited by James Luckard; 07-02-2016 at 11:02 PM. |

For anyone who has the German disc and was on the fence, I can confirm this disc is not identical.
REVISED, SEE POST BELOW I originally posted that the German disc was cropped and 1.78 instead of 1.85, but I have learned my region B player has overscan issues. Last edited by James Luckard; 07-27-2016 at 05:27 AM. |

I asked Kino Lorber on Facebook and they confirmed, their BD of Cuba is indeed a newer transfer of the film than the German BD.

My apologies everyone, in comparing the new RUSSIA HOUSE BD today, I discovered my region B player has significant overscan. My appraisal of the German BD of CUBA is no longer valid, I now believe any difference in the image was due to the machine and not the disc.
The Kino Lorber CUBA disc is region locked to A, so I can't play it on the same machine as the German disc. Still, I was able to play the TT RUSSIA HOUSE on both of my machines, proving the overscan on the region B machine, and I am convinced my comment above about the German disc being 1.78 and cropped is in error. Sorry for the confusion. |
