France Evolution/Innocence (Lucile Hadzihalilovic)

Evolution + Innocence Blu-ray PRE-ORDER

Two films from Lucile Hadzihalilovic coming to Blu-ray from French label Potemkine.

Quote:
Evolution (2015): The only residents of young Nicholas's seaside town are women and boys. When he sees a dead body in the ocean one day, he begins to question his existence and surroundings. Why must he, and all the other boys, be hospitalised?
Quote:
Innocence (2004): At the heart of a densely wooded forest lies a mysterious girls' boarding school, cut off from the outside world by a great wall with no door. Within, a group of youngsters aged between seven and twelve gather round a small coffin, from which emerges a new pupil, six-year-old Iris. Led by the eldest girl, Bianca, Iris is introduced to this strange yet enchanting world of lamp-lit forest paths and eerie underground passageways, where there are no adults save for some elderly servants and two melancholy young teachers. But this haven is one from which the girls are forbidden to leave; those that do are never heard from again. Haunting and bizarre, filmmaker Lucile Hadzihalovic imbues Innocence with a fairytale-like sense of menace and images of surreal beauty, creating a mesemrising and timeless evocation of childhood.
I have not seen the new film yet, but Innocence is a small masterpiece. Intoxicatingly beautiful film! Hopefully, Curzon Artificial Eye will upgrade their DVD release.

No English subs on either. Very frustrating.

Both these films are unique and powerful.

I saw Evolution at the cinema a couple of months ago, and it's a stunning experience. Sad that these won't have subs, as I doubt they'll get a UK release on Blu Ray.

Nothing on The Fury yet? That movie is awesome. Apparently Carlotta is the French Criterion Collection

Thanks for the thread, I hadn't noticed this release!

For the stand-alone DVD release from Potemkine at least French hard-of-hearing subtitles are listed, so I hope that the Blu-ray will also get French subs. This looks like the only Blu-ray release of these two films worldwide, so I could probably live with that.

The exact details seem to be missing so far. No word about special features either and if both films will be on one Blu-ray disc or on two separate discs.

This is simply amazing. If any movie deserves the HD treatment it's INNOCENCE which for me is even a big masterpiece. The lack of subs is frustrating but as there isn't that much dialogue I can live with it.

Love both of these films. Gonna get that even without the subs.

So will Evolution and Innocence share one disc?
It says two disc set and that it includes a BD and a DVD... hope that doesn't mean "Innocence" will just be a Dvd?

I did received the Blu-Ray with 2 dvd box today. I must say this is a stunning release. Very beautiful packaging and discs menus. Innocence and Evolution seperately each on a dvd with trailers and interviews. The Blu-ray is a BD 50 with Evolution, Innocence and the short movie Nectar.
The Quality of All three movies is fantastic. For the movie Innocence I can say that the image is a vibrant sharp 2K scan with some noise (due to 16mm original), only the titles are shaking. I'm very content with this release.

How do you mean 'english unfriendly' ? The discs only have the original french soundtrack, with optional french subtitles for the hard of hearing.

Default some screenshots from Innocence

Some screenshots from 'Innocence'. Remark that the movie was filmed in original 16mm. Due to this format, there is always more grain / noise. Captures are resized to 1600x900 px. (my screen resolution).

thanks for the screen-caps, mate!

I thought the DVD looked pretty good already. Can't wait to watch it in HD; pretty sure it looks good in motion. Too bad it doesn't have English subs.

In motion It looks pretty good. At the start of the movie you think that you are going to see a bad transfer, because of the shaky text titles (just like the dvd), but when the actually movie begins you can witness the good transfer. Grainy though, but sharp, nice colours and no clipping shadows.

Evolution is really good, you can tell it's from the same director as Innocence. Very artsy and moody and with children at the center of the story.
Still prefer Innocence overall though.

It's a shame this set doesn't have any subs, but I'll get it anyway and just rip the disc to watch on a media player with external subtitles. Doubt these will get BD releases anywhere else (Evolution only got a bare-bones Dvd release in the UK)

Thanks for the screens beyondthehorizon. Loos great, i love grainy 16mm filmlook in HD
Any chance for pics of the packaging?
