Default Classics?

Where are the classics on blu-ray? I don't mean your favorite movie, I mean probably the best 100 movies of all time. So far only 2 are available on Blu-Ray (Bladerunner is not one of them, sorry).I just watched A Christmas Story on Blu-Ray and it got me thinking. This is probably the best movie of the past 25 years and the Blu-Ray is terrible. I really hope Warner is restoring this for the 25th anniversary next year. People claim that old movies will never look as good as new movies but i think that is not expecting enough. A Christmas Story needs to look perfect. It is only 24 years old.

As much as I love A Christmas Story, I don't think it would make any best movie lists. Is it being restored for the 25th anniversary? (I don't think I can consider movies I grew up with as classics, I still think of the movies way before my time.)

I have not scene this one on Blu-ray, I am having friends over for a xmas eve dinner and decided to buy Bad Santa as the movie of the evening

Whoa, stop right there...

Blade Runner is on the AFI's list this year at #97.

Who's list is "A Christmas Story" on?

Sorry but this is not the best movie of the past 25 years. To me there is only one moive that can go here and it is not a happy movie at all. That would be Schindler's List. It is only 14 years old but becasue of the story it tells it is one of the Top 25 films ever. And I am one that thinks just about any film newer than 1975 should never be considered a great movie of all time.

But if you want to talk about great Christmas movies we need the best all time for the season. It's a Wonderful Life.

Good to hear, it should be a fun one after all my guest have had a few drinks and I thought they wouldn't find the humor in A Christmas Story as easily.

Now that depends on what you mean. If you mean that it hasn't really had the time to take the true test of time, yes, you have a point. But there are some films which have made such a unique mark that I would call them "classic". They will likely be considered classics in the future. Das Boot I'd wager on as a popular example. Rembetiko as another one that certainly in some countries it will be considered a classic (and probably already is).

One could expand on the list of course, but any list is subjective and biased from the point of view (and country) from which such a list is made.

You hit it right on the head about standing the test of time. And the two movies you listed would be on the short list of those that could make it as well.

On the subject of the German Das Boot, one of my favorite films (now Wolfgang does Troy...ick) - one should also consider the Russian Battleship Potemkin - great, great film.

Battleship Potemkin is one of the best political films ever made. It is so pro-lennism that it is hard for me to get into without thinking of it as propoganda.

Seven Samurai...enough said.

I didn't expect anyone to know the movie and the meaning! At least not so soon!

{---resoundedly impressed. You're well-read!

My film professor was a card carrying member of the American Socialist Party.

I will say that the stairs scene was uber-impressive. That scene still holds up after 80 years. Nosferatu and/or Metropolis would be damn awesome.

Nosferatu, classic Vampires.

I can only imagine in the future seeing some Fellini films on Blu-Ray...how good could they make Anita Ekberg look in all her black and white glory?
