Default Indiana Jones is Blu quality

I have not really been watching many of my 1200 ish SD-DVD's since I have been buying Blu, but lately have been putting a lot in just to see the PQ with the up-convert. I have tried a lot, but the Indiana movies are top quality. I think most would think they were BD's if you did not tell them.

I have been using my PS3 for up-convert which seems to be a little better than my Panny 30. How many people here have tried these and have been impressed with the PQ?

I watched them a few weeks ago and couldn't agree more. I let my Pioneer set do the conversion and they looked very very good.

yes they look good. they aren't blu quality tho. i'd say they look like tomb raider or older movies on blu like goodfellas.

while i agree they are the best upconverted dvds i have seen (along with bad boys 2), i hate seeing comments like this.

blu ray or hd dvd would take that dvd and add 10 times more picture and information to it. so it's not really close. however, the movies are the type of movies that if put on hd would shocase it unbelievably well. can't wait for it to happen.

I actually had the oposite reaction.

After being spoiled for many months by blue ray movies. I played Indiana Jones and the temple of doom, and it was most unacceptable. I especially had problems with the opening sequence of Temple of Doom. Too grainy and couldnt make up much since its so dark. Compare that to some of the sequences of Kingdom of Heaven BD, and its a world of difference. Kindom of Heaven has scenes just as dark, but thre is no grain and there is tons of detail. And its not just because its a newer movie, just take a look at Close Encounters in BD, it looks as if was made last year.

I dont care how good an upscaling machine is, the information on SD DVDs is simply not there. I does not look anything remotely close to BD.

I just played Lord of the Rings - Fellowship of the Ring (extended version) last night, and while I still love the sound in that dvd, I still cant get over how blurry everything looks on SD DVD.

The Indian Jones Trilogy on DVD looks really good upconverted because each movie was restored frame by frame and remastered in high def. This means that if they're ever released on Blu-ray, it will be easy to port them over from those same masters from 2003.

Yeah, that was a Lowry Digital Images restoration.

The masters ought to hold up well for the (hopefully) upcoming release, at which point the existing DVDs will most certainly not look Blu quality anymore.

I agree, compared to Kingdom, crank, POTC's and movies like that, no comparison, but to the BD's of XXX, Hitch, Tomb Raider and a lot of Warner titles the Indiana's look as good or better in some cases.

Don't get me wrong, my re buys are about 140 of my BD's. I like the PQ and AQ upgrades, but also the size of the case difference. They have been great for space savings in my storage cases. Also, I feel that a lot of the early BD's were just poor transfers(as the ones mentioned earlier). Most of the studios lately though are giving us great encodes/transfers.

"remastered in high def"... what resolution does that usually mean? remastered in 1080p or at a higher resolution, and then later downscaled to 1080 for Blu (hopefully)? Just wonderin...

It usually means that it's remastered in 4k resolution. Like Blade Runner was for it's Blu-ray release.

Check out the link for a little more detail: http://www.techweb.com/encyclopedia/...m=4Kresolution

And yes, then it would be downscaled to 1080.

^ ah thanks for the info... so 4K is considered to be 'ultra' resolution? and how would one get to see what the PQ is like on a 4K master? digital cinema perhaps?

sorry for getting off-topic... I haven't tried watching indy upscaled yet... a must-do for tomorrow...

The Indiana Jones movies look great on DVD, but even lower quality Blu discs like Tomb Raider still look better without a doubt. The extra resolution still shows here.

I guess you'd have to see it on a 4k Ultra HD digital projector. Then again, you'd also need a really good connection inside the studio that releases the particular movie in order for that to happen.

You'd be hard pressed to tell the difference between 4K and 2K, especially in current d-cinema theaters. Most d-cinemas are 2K, as 4K projection technology just isn't good enough right now. Also, most source content really can't take advantage of 4K.

4K, as it's tossed around, is generally used in context of 'high end' full film scanning, archival and restoration. This is not about the end point presentation.

It's obvious that there is no way of watching 4k presentation of movies currently at home, but studios do have the capability to view such versions of their movies via Ultra HD digital projection in their testing facilities.

gvortex7, there are a handful of 4K d-cinema theaters in the world that anyone can go visit. But my comment stands about the less than optimal quality.

Wow, either your loaded with cash or you really love a variety of home theater in your house. I mean that many plasma TVs and BD players? Wow.

In case you are wondering what I'm talking about, look at C6 Z06's signature.

^ thats certainly an impressive collection of AV equipment...

but regardint the 2/4K issue, ultimately, 2K's the optimum resolution (right now, anyway)...?
