4D better not become an industry term for 4K in 3D.

High frame rate is something I just don't think will catch on outside of maybe sports broadcasts. It's just too jarring even for the average movie goer when it comes to films in anything above 24 fps.

I'm bored with the HFR bashing.

I understand the need to continue to grow and push technology and to some extent I applaud it; I'm a big proponent of Dolby Vision and want to see it grow in theaters. I just think the way a film has moved is too ingrained in people to ever really change, it's just too jarring. The Hobbit movies were not really universally praised for their higher frame rates and that's still less than half of what Lee is doing here. Now don't get me wrong, I think HFR has a place, documentaries about nature look fantastic and sports would be the biggest beneficiary of the higher frame rate.

HFR looked great on The Hobbit (at least the last one, which is the only one I saw in that format). I'm sure Ang Lee has done a phenomenal job; HFR on its own probably is too jarring to ever go mainstream, but it helps amplify 3D while making the format clearer and sharper to such a degree that frankly I don't think 3D should be done any other way. Looking forward to seeing this in 4K HFR 3D if/when theaters in my area are equipped (and they're usually pretty good about that).

Oh, and I also hope "4D" as a term doesn't become a thing...

Followed all the reactions ever since the first screening on friday and the reviews are mixed, as to be expected. Some of the critics hate it, saying it took them out of the movie, that it was so distracting, or just didn't work, and some love it or appreciate it.

Ang Lee explained all of it, his intentions in a Q&A on Deadline which is great, but like he said, this is uncharted territory, they were figuring a lot of stuff out day by day, he had to rethink his directing style, the acting (saying the acting becomes much more noticeable at 120 fps, leagues beyond The Hobbit obviously (that I dug, still like 24 fps better) ), the lighting obviously since you need so much more light to shoot at 120 fps.

Etc, etc, it seems the action scenes in Iraq do benefit the most along with the juxtaposition of the walk during the halftime show with fireworks going off bringing the soldiers back in Iraq, etc. Seems the close-ups and quieter moments also benefit from an added intimacy, although that depends on who watches it.

All in all, this is something you have to see for yourself to know what it is like. The AMC Lincoln Theater where they screened it is the only screening room in NY to show it in 4K 120 fps 3D, there should be two more in LA, and three in Asia.

Rest of the world will get the 2D 2K 120 fps, 3D 2K 60 fps versions (that most theaters ARE capable of showing) and the regular 2D & 3D 24 fps versions.

The HFR did bring out some snark on Twitter: "IF THIS IS THE FUTURE OF CINEMA, I'LL STICK TO 24 FPS, THANK YOU VERY MUCH", "THE HIGH FRAMERATE KILLED THE MOVIE" , but that's classic with change in cinema, HFR is something I feel you do get used to (although I haven't seen this yet), and being exposed to the first movie in this format for the first time is bound to be polarizing.

Ang Lee did admit before the screening being very nervous, and to keep an open mind and give it a chance, but like you say, 24 fps is too ingrained in everyone's minds for HFR to become mainstream, but he says he's still learning, and wants to keep working with it on his Ali vs Frazier movie Thrilla In Manila.

I think the younger audiences will embrace the HFR though.

Exciting, pioneering stuff.

Ive only seen Life of Pi and Hulk and it is safe to say I'm not an Ang Lee fan lol. Both were a damn snoozefest, but I will say, the dude is seriously great at visuals. Hulk as boring as it is, at least tried something cool with the split screen stuff. It was neat and I really liked it visually, movie was bloody awful tho. I really don't know what he was trying to do there. It was really pretentious. And Life of Pi has some of the most gorgeous visuals and 3D I have ever seen, but again, super boring. I just don't find the material he picks interesting. But hey, different strokes for different folks.

On a side note, my girlfriend is Taiwanese (like Lee) so she gets so upset that I don't like his movies, lol. She is a fan. She will probably drag me to see this

Kinda curious about the 4K 3D 120fps. I like 3D when it is done right and I liked the HFR on The Hobbit. I don't understand the *****ing.

He's not pretentious, and there's nothing try hard about his work, he's literally one of the most humble directors you'll ever see, watch his interviews, and more of his movies.

The only Ang Lee movie I have seen was Life of Pi, and I absolutely loved it. Looking forward to seeing Billy Lynn but I doubt seriously any theater in New Orleans will show the HFR 3D version. If by chance they do I will definitely see it that way.

If the Walmart Canada ad is correct, this release will include both the Blu-ray and the DVD versions.

since it now appears that the 3D engagements will be relegated to only two theaters nation wide, I'm hoping Sony will add the 3D disc as they did with 'Angry Birds' and 'Ghostbusters' - otherwise, what was the point in filming this as such, and not giving the 3D a wide-release ?? Even the trailer's don't advertise this as a 3D release.
