Gross, I wouldnt support this even for a penny.
Just because I hate stuff like this that draws attention to it because its based on just women. I would support it if it were just about good movies. I dont care if a woman directs a movie or not, if I like the movie then I like it because its a good movie. I will never support something that is sexist, or reverse sexist because each are equally bad in their own way. Drawing attention based on a persons sex is a terrible, terrible thing. And sadly thats the way things are going now. To get attention you label is being pro woman purely for attention since its a hot topic. They dont care about women directors, they just want to cash in on something for the sake of attention by saying "See how politically correct and awesome we are for signaling out directors only because they have a vagina! Spend money with us because were progressive and super sweet" |

Many of these films were made before women even had a right to vote. Pioneers of African-American Cinema was awesome and I hope, whenever this comes out, it's the same level of awesome. |

Hey, what happened to the comments on the blu-ray.com announcement of this boxset? In which I engaged in fruitful dialogue about sexism in the film industry? The comments just disappeared.
Kind of strange, and ironic, for such comments to disappear in a thread where a top blu-ray.com contributor griped about undue silencing of dissenting opinion. I don't want to get all conspiratorial, but where'd the comments go? Last edited by ThatKieslowskiHaze; 09-19-2018 at 01:01 AM. |

Agreed, you guys were having a great debate. Appreciated your lucid and relevant points @ThatKieslowskiHaze. Mods determining it was too “political?” Who the hell knows. ![]() |

I got this when it was on sale and going to go through it once I’m done with Ingmar Bergman’s Cinema. The point of sets like these is to give light to overlooked cinema outside the usual film school curriculum. I have a BA in film and never heard about filmmakers like Alice-Guy Blache or Lois Weber in my classes. But plenty of Griffith, Hitchcock, Ford, Welles, etc. Flicker Alley’s set was a blast to go through since the only films I had seen before were Suspense and Spook Sport. |

The above referenced post is most troublesome for its complete disregard for the importance of historical and social memory. The set doesn’t promote a sexist agenda, it is cataloging the achievements of an oppressed demographic, a distinction only made by the social constructs of the past, not Kino Lorber.

I agree 100%. That persons response just shows their sexism showing and complete lack of grasp on history itself and how awful women have been treated since the beginning of time. I wouldn't be surprised if they had negative outburst over the 'Pioneers of African American Cinema" box set that was released awhile back. There are reasons why such sets are important rather than letting them fade with history. |

Just to chime in, Gargus is totally off base & living in his own warped reality. It's not "reverse sexism" to put out a single box set highlighting obscure female filmmakers. I mean, seriously, that's a totally hysterical overreaction. As CaseyScott said very eloquently, "The set doesn’t promote a sexist agenda, it is cataloging the achievements of an oppressed demographic, a distinction only made by the social constructs of the past, not Kino Lorber." As Dig311Dug pointed out, many of the films were made before women could even VOTE. So let these filmmakers have their one little box set, it's not a threat to anyone.
And as far as Kino Lorber "cashing in" - that's a ludicrous statement. C'mon man, is a collection of obscure silent films that have to be painstakingly cobbled together from various elements worldwide & then restored, and new scores created, ever going to yield huge sales/profits? Of course not. This is a labor of love, that has absolutely nothing to do with "political correctness" (whatever that even means anymore), and kudos to Kino Lorber for doing it. I'm not really that interested in silent films although I love early pre-code talkies, but I'm really thinking of supporting this fine project with a purchase. |
