United Kingdom Angela's Ashes

That's one that has slipped under the radar.

Ever so slightly cliched portrayal of Irish hardship in the early 20th century but enough wit and dark humour amongst the bleakness to warrant a look.

Just spun Parker's The Life Of David Gale. Disappointed and mildly surprised that Warner Bros. has not released this on BD in the States. No review of the UK disc on the site. Any comments about PQ appreciated.

My god, this is such a bad movie compared to the book. The book gets a 10 and the movie gets a 0.

Yes, I wonder if the poor b.o. is the reason that even catalog-friendly Warner hasn't released this on BD in the States.

Not only did you resurrect an old thread but It has nothing to do with Angela's Ashes.

Yes it is. He just watched a movie by the same director and wants to pick this one up but it hasn't been released in the US and wants to know whether the UK edition of Angela's Ashes is any good.

This is a Paramount movie in the US, Warner Bros has nothing to do with it. It didn't do well at the box office either so importing is going to be the only BD venue most likely.

I'm reminded of a fave Andy Dufresne line: "How can you be so obtuse?"

And Goddess help you if you think six months is "old."

IMDb led me to believe that Warner is in the rights mix somehow ("Paramount Pictures (1999-2000) (USA) (North America) (all media)"; "Warner Home Video (2014) (USA) (DVD)").

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0145653/companycredits

The fact that Par had the DVD 17 years ago may or may not be dispositive. If some of us were more concerned with substance over sass, we could talk about how this pic's absence on BD in the US may have to do with a rights issue stemming from the very successful source material and ancillary rights on a new medium.

Incidentally, I just flipped a copy of the UK BD through my store. Looking forward to spinning this.

(P.S. - Further sauce for the speculative rights issue goose: The Par DVD isn't available via Netflix. They obviously used to as the title has 243 member reviews. So something happened--disc breakage attrition or removal at the studio's behest. But Par ain't givin' them any more copies apparently.)

For those interested in such things: What is billed as "Behind the Scenes Featurette" on the UK BD appears to be the same supplement as "The Making Of Angela's Ashes" on the Stateside DVD.

But "Alan's Ashes: Interview With Alan Parker" is a 40 (!) minute piece that appears exclusive to the UK BD. Looking forward to hearing whatever this guy--who also directed The Wall BTW--has to say after watching the movie soon.
