Excellent news. I was wondering when BFI was going to get around to the Essanay set.
They did say late 2016 but January will do just fine for me.

I hope they are planning to release the Keystone collection in HD as well.

I hope they release the Chaplin Revue + other First National non-revue short films in one Blu-ray package.

The Curzon Artificial Eye Chaplin Revue Blu-ray is missing 3 shorts: The Idle Class, Pay Day and Sunnyside (those are scattered around in other Chaplin movie releases they did, and in the big boxset of course since it has all the single releases).

And, yeah, hopefully BFI has the "Triple Trouble" short as an extra like the Flicker Alley release has.

One can never be sure since the BFI Mutual release had very different extras than the Flicker Alley Mutual release.

Saw this on the BFI website:

Quote:
The result of a 12 year project, led by Lobster Films and the Cineteca di Bologna, this comprehensive 2 disc Blu-ray collection features 15 films, fully restored, presented alongside exclusive special features – never before released in the UK.
Which made me think that "Triple Trouble" is included. But then I saw in the 1st post that the "His Regeneration" is listed in the shorts. According to Wikipedia, "It featured Charlie Chaplin in an uncredited role as a customer".

In this Wikipedia page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charli...in_filmography the "His Regeneration" is listed in the "Cameo" section, not in "Essanay" section. The "Essanay" section has 15 shorts listed and the last one is "Triple Trouble".

Confusing.

I wouldn't think too much of it. If Charlie's in it for just a cameo appearance, maybe they decided just to add it anyway as a bonus short instead of a special feature. Someone who added to the Wikipedia page may have just entered the wrong information.

I'm just worried if "Triple Trouble" is included or not, I don't care about the "His Regeneration", Chaplin has got only a cameo role in it. Flicker Alley BD had "Triple Trouble" as a bonus, hopefully BFI has it too. BFI Mutual had different bonuses than Flicker Alley Mutual, that's why I'm worried.

The full specs should dispel any fears:

Quote:
Charlie Chaplin
The Essanay Comedies
2-disc set on Blu-ray and DVD

In 1914, the great Charlie Chaplin signed a one-year contract with the Essanay Film Manufacturing Company for what was then an unprecedented salary. Shooting in its California and Chicago studios, he went on to make 16 films that established him as the world’s favourite screen comedian. On 23 January 2017 the BFI will release The Essanay Comedies, a collection of all 16 films, in 2-disc Blu-ray and DVD sets. Each set also contains exclusive special features never before released in the UK, including a 1951 version of A Burlesque on Carmen voiced by comedian Peter Sellers.

Unlike other stars of the time, Charlie Chaplin retained creative control over his films, from writing to casting and directing. Despite the strain that put on his relationship with Essanay, this fruitful period of his career saw him evolve his style, resulting in seminal works such as The Tramp, The Bank and The Champion.

These comprehensive collections are the result of a 12-year project led by Lobster Films and Cineteca di Bologna to fully restore the films, which are:

His New Job, A Night Out, The Champion, In the Park, A Jitney Elopement, The Tramp, By the Sea, His Regeneration, Work, A Woman, The Bank, Shanghaied, A Night in the Show, A Burlesque on Carmen, Police and Triple Trouble

Special features
• All films fully restored in High Definition
• Charlie Chaplin: The Long Year at Essanay (2016, 23 mins): newly produced video essay presented by writer and broadcaster Glenn Mitchell;
• Charlie’s Triple Trouble (c1944, 15 mins): the re-released British version of Chaplin’s 1918 film Triple Trouble;
• A Burlesque on Carmen (1951, 36 mins): containing additional footage filmed after Chaplin’s departure from Essanay. This version features a commentary by comedian Peter Sellers, which was used for the film’s British re-release;
• Charlie Butts In (c1920, 10 mins): short compilation of out-takes and alternative shots from Chaplin’s 1915 film A Night Out;
• Illustrated booklet with essays by Frank Scheide, new writing by Glenn Mitchell and Vic Pratt, and full film credits

Thank you. I don't know where you got that but it seems to be legit. Oddly BFI's own webshop still doesn't have that information.

Though, the

kind of bothers me. Wikipedia & IMDb lists the running time as 23 minutes.

It was posted by MichaelB on other forums, so it's legit. Might even be on Amazon by now.

I get the impression there are two versions of Triple Trouble on the disc, and that is a bonus one, but obviously I can't be certain.

Oh, I didn't think of that, interesting. Going by that, then A Burlesque on Carmen should have 2 versions too. I guess we'll have to wait and see. Thanks.

Disappointing that there aren't alternate scores, and just stereo, no 5.1.

I don't mind having just the one score, but I agree with what you said about the 5.1 track. The Mutual Comedies set gets it, but why not the Essanay release? My receiver is set to convert stereo into 5.1, but the 2.0 isn't a deal breaker to me at all. I hope we keep getting more of these BFI Chaplin sets.

The thing is, it appears to be pretty much identical to the Cineteca Bologna's blu-ray release in Spain, but that release is much cheaper.

It probably depends on what form the scores exist. Some of Carl Davis' scores have both 5.1 and 2.0 stereo mixes (Our Hospitality, The General, Intolerance, the BFI Phantom of the Opera), but others are stereo-only (Safety Last!, The Big Parade, even The Freshman, which was recently recorded).

This set just has the live band scores from Cineteca Bologna. It seems all three of the sets are the same when it comes to the films.

There are indeed two versions of both A Burlesque on Carmen and Triple Trouble on the disc. The British revamps are included as a curiosity, not a substitute.

Think this will come down at all before release? The Mutuals set wasn't 2/3rds of the price of this one at release but was the same amount of discs.

Ahh, I keep falling for the Flicker Alley's and BFI always beats them at a better price, although this time the difference in both releases is not as big, just few more supplements.
