Warner Bros

HARRY POTTER ON UHD

(Unless noted otherwise, all of the links in this thread will point to the US release.)

What releases should I get if I want as much of the legacy bonus content as possible?

Option A - Price is no objection; I want it all.
The long-OOP Wizard's Collection is definitely the most fulfilling. It has all of the discs from the Ultimate Editions, as well as an exclusive bonus disc. The set also comes with various accessories, and looks amazing on shelf.

What is missing if you go this route:
-The 4K discs for the films themselves.
-The character cards from the previous Ultimate Editions were not carried over with this release.
-The Magical Movie Mode for Philosopher's/Sorcerer's Stone, which post-dates the 4K releases.

Option 2 - I like Option 1, but I don't want to spend *that* much.
Warner Bros took the same discs from the Wizards Collection and released them a couple of years later in a more compact Hogwarts Collection. All of the on-disc content is the same, but this release drops the deluxe packaging and various accessories in lieu of a more standard book-style packaging. This release is also OOP, but can had for far cheaper than the Wizard's Collection.

What is missing if you go this route:
-The same items that are from the Wizard's Collection.
-The various goodies that are exclusive to the Wizard's Collection.

Option 3 - I want the bonus features, but don't want to have to buy the 4Ks afterward.
The easier route to go is to buy the individual 4K UHD releases of the eight films. They come with the documentary discs that were on the previous sets which were not ported over to the complete collection 4K set, with the documentary discs for Order of the Pheonix onwards carrying over the DVD extras.
(Click links above.)

What is missing if you go this route:
-Everything that is missing from the Wizard's and Hogwarts collections, respectively.
-The exclusive 'bonus disc' from the Wizard's and Hogwarts collection sets This has not been released on any subsequent set. However, there is an abridged version of the documentary from this disc that was released on the Target-exclusive version of Deathly Hallows, Part 2.
-The DVD bonus features discs for the first four films that were in the Ultimate Editions onwards. These are the same discs that were on their initial standalone DVD releases, so they're extremely easy to come across nowadays.
-The 3D discs for the two Deathly Hallows movies, which can also be found on their own.

Option 4 - Option 3 sounds appealing, but I also want the 'Magical Movie Mode' disc.
If you want the cheapest and most convenient way to get most of the extras, get any of the Hogwarts Express sets that have 25 discs.

This set was released in the US, the UK, Germany, Spain and Italy. However, not all sets are created equally. Courtesy of Hedrox, The US set is missing the eight discs that house the Documentary and bonus features, and the UK set is missing the extended editions. Additionally, the German and Spanish releases are OOP, and feature the text in their respective native languagess.

For those reasons, the Italian release is the one that is recommended. This set will have the 24 discs from the individual 4K releases, as well as the Magical Movie Mode for the firt film as its 25th disc. Additionally, the bonus accessories have English text.

[Show spoiler]

(Photos of the German set, for illustrative purposes.)

What is missing if you go this route:
-Everything listed from the individual 4K releases, though you do gain the Magical Movie Mode disc.

Option 5 - I'm fine losing the bonus features. I just care about the movies.
Any of the Complete Collection 4K releases have you covered. Please be aware that there are some releases that are UHD-only (8 discs), and some that are UHD and Blu-Ray (16 discs).

Once again courtesy of Hedrox the German release features the Blu-Ray discs with the updated transfers, while the other countries all feature the previous Blu-Ray discs from the Wizards/Hogwarts/Ultimate Edition releases.

Additional Information
The intial Blu-Ray releases of the first four films have the bulk of the legacy DVD features that are the bonus discs that WB utilized for the Ultimate Editions onward. If you'd like to limit the amount of discs, you can replace the included Blu-Ray discs with the initial stand-alone Blu-Ray releases for the first four films, and you would be missing the following:
Philosopher's/Sorcerer's Stone - TBA
Chamber of Secrets - TBA
Prisoner of Azkaban - Interactive games from the bonus DVD disc
Goblet of Fire - Picture-in-Picture interactive mode. While not on WB's initial Blu-Ray release of Goblet of Fire, the HD DVD release does include it. (WB was an initial backer of the losing format, and felt like putting exclusives on their HD DVDs would help that format sell.) This is not recommended as WB's HD DVDs have a reputation for disc rot.

Depends on they think there's enough of a UHD Blu market building to actually double dip.

Well it makes sense timing wise to release them at the same time as Fantastic Beasts, although I'm a little surprised to see them this early in the UHD cycle.

I'm not. Goblet of Fire was one of their very first HD DVD titles and the entire series up to that point (1-5) was also released on HD shortly after. Warners wanna milk this cow just as soon as possible, and the home video release of Fantastic Beasts really is the perfect excuse.

I've been hunting for a HP set since I sold my old Blu-ray boxset (still looking for the Hogwart's Collection at a decent price) but damn, I might have to hold on now.

Told the wife that WB were releasing these. Her response: Ah crap.

Why Warner why?!

Day one for me.

good I can't wait for these. I never got round to buying them all on Blu-ray I just had this feeling that they would all receive extended editions much like the Lord of The Rings but it never happened. Anyway I will have these extended or not it's been years since I last watched them.

A bit odd that it's just the last 4 movies, but I'm not complaining as I will be buying these (and hoping the first 4 get the 4K treatment)!

Big fan of this series, and I hope that we see TDK Trilogy make an appearance on 4K in the not-too-distant future as well.

It's not really odd at all. It will take more effort and expense to get the first few Harry Potters up to snuff for 4k releases. The first movie, for example, has really bad, low rez CGI that will only look worse at higher resolutions.

Well, that's something I didn't consider, but makes sense when you bring it up.

Looks like I'll be waiting until March to get these. Plenty of time to save up.

I really hope so! I only have the UE for 1-4, so getting 5-8 on UHD with the missing parts of the documentary would rock!

That's irrelevant. It was finished to 35mm, so it just needs a new 4K DI transfer. The visual effects aren't going to have any work done on them, they are how they are.

Much depends on whether WB wants to up rez the effects and re-comp them before creating a 4k archival master like Fox did with The Martian.
