I noticed Costa Gavras' 'Z' has just been released in France, as part of a very pricey Costa Gavras box set. I can't find any reviews, does anybody know if this set has any English subtitles? Hopefully there be a stand alone Z release at some later time.

There are no English subtitles on any of the discs in the boxset, although 'Hanna K.' and 'Missing' have English audio. Most of the films in the set have received recent 2K or 4K restorations. Criterion are likely to upgrade it at some point, but I'd also love to see the other films get English friendly releases. Cohen may be a possibility, and perhaps Arrow in the UK. Here's hoping anyway.

The Criterion editions of State of Siege and The Confession are both the new 2K restorations already, and their New year's drawing hinted at Missing being released. No word on Z, though.

The Criterion's releases of State of Siege and The Confession are using the same 2K restorations used in the French set.

Reading the details in the booklet included in the French set, only Compartiment tueurs and Un homme de trop were restored in 4K, the other movies seem to have been restored in 2K only.

Missing seems coarser and especially dirtier than the other movies, which makes me think it might be sourced from an older HD master.

None of the movies have English subtitles, but more importantly, all of them are encoded in 1080i50, thus being unsuitable for most North American BD players.

...but easier to link up to any subtitles ripped from a PAL DVD.

It is over £100, though. OUCH!

Hopefully we'll get a UK or US release, this is one of my favourite films.

When Criterion released the DVD in the US it was from a new HD master. I think it was JUST too early for a joint DVD/Bly-ray Disc release.

Interesting. I've seen that drawing and some of the speculation arising from it, but I haven't seen any other comments about 'Missing' being hinted at. Which part of the drawing suggested it?

The fact there was a pan Missing from the line hanging on the wall.

Yep. The pan missing is a double clue, for both "Missing" and "Deephan" (the D pan is the one missing)

It's such a shame we still don't have an English-friendly release of this classic yet.

The Criterion Blu-ray DVD was taken from a (then) brand new 1080p master.

Is the color on the German Blu-ray accurate?

Also, Criterion only has DVD and HD streaming.

My apologies, I've corrected that.

Thanks for pointing it out.

Still wondering about the color on the German Blu-ray. It's on caps-a-holic, and I know it doesn't have English subtitles

"Z" is one of my favourite films ever, hard to believe it still doesn't have an English-friendly release. I always joked that I was going to see "The Abyss" on blu-ray before "Z". Well...

I was unaware of a Spanish release, thought it was only released on France and Germany. Thanks for the heads up! Do you happen to have it? I’m curious about how the PQ/AQ on the Spanish blu compares to the French and German ones.

It just came out. It's a Resen "bootleg" but that doesn't necessarily mean the quality is bad.

Interesting that Criterion has streaming rights, but not for physical. I'm thinking physical rights are holding up a release. I have the Fox Lorber DVD mastered from a PAL source, but the commentary is pretty good.
