Just noticed this as I was looking at James Mangold's credits. It was first announced in 2015 and appears to be his next film after Logan.

James Mangold to Direct Black List Script ‘Seducing Ingrid Bergman’

James Mangold is attached to direct “Seducing Ingrid Bergman,” which was voted to the 2014 Black List of Hollywood’s best unproduced screenplays, multiple individuals familiar with the project have told TheWrap.

Arash Amel wrote the script and will produce with Uday Chopra of YRF Entertainment, which optioned Chris Greenhalgh’s book of the same title and will finance the movie. YRF’s Jonathan Reiman will serve as an executive producer on the project.

“Seducing Ingrid Bergman” chronicles the torrid, life-changing romance between the “Casablanca” actress and celebrated war photographer Robert Capa that ignited in Paris after WWII.

Bergman’s life story is complicated. While a wholesome image defined her early career, she was denounced by the U.S. Senate for having loose morals after her affair with director Roberto Rossellini became public, which led to her taking a break from Hollywood. Capa had his own issues — chief among them, gambling and alcoholism — but he was fearless with a camera and served as a catalyst for Bergman’s self-awakening and ultimate liberation from the Hollywood machine.

Bergman and Capa are plum parts for movie stars and Mangold’s attachment should help the producers recruit top acting talent for the roles.

Seeing how she's the only Swedish actress Hollywood is aware of (Noomi Rapace only seems to get cast in thankless B-movies nowadays and everyone else would be seen as too ethnic) and Vikander already narrated a documentary on Bergman, it's likely the film only gets made with her on board.

I'd rather this were a small independent film than the Hollywoodized product (though ironically produced by Yash Raj, one of India's biggest companies) it's bound to be. But if it reunites Mangold with Phedon Papamichael (who didn't lens either Wolverine film Mangold directed due to conflicts with Alexander Payne's films), it guess it can't be all bad.

Why not cast Rebecca Ferguson, a Swedish actress who unlike Vikander, actually looks a lot like Ingrid Bergman ?

^ You're right, Ferguson is a better choice. But Vikander's more famous and already seems to be cast in everything, so I'd still expect her to get the part.

Ferguson's career is pretty hot since M:I Rogue Nation und she will soon be seen in lead roles in several major films.

Actually I see that Ferguson has a movie coming up with Hugh Jackman ("The Greatest Showman"), maybe she does have some sort of inside track since Mangold will be directing this.

I would be all over this. I've loved her since the White Queen, and it got amplified with her work in the new MI and in Girl on the Train and Hercules (the Rock version).

Good call on Rebecca Ferguson.

I wouldn't put it past Hollywood to cast Vikander in the role, but Bergman should be played a real woman, not some dainty little girl.

As much as I hate seeing the terms 'seducing' and 'Ingrid Bergman' in the same sentence my interest could be whetted by an appearance by Alicia Vikander. She is gorgeous and she demonstrated in "A Royal Affair" that she can do strength, gravitas, and poise. And how about Michael Shannon as Capa? He has the same rough general look as Capa and would provide an astounding counterpoint to Vikander's slighter presence and more demure features.

But, whatever, this would need to be done with style, class, and elegance. A title change might be a good start. And they would need to go big~ the storyline really does have some promise and this could be a real winner if Mangold can rise to the task. And for gawdsake, no CGI! Use some imagination!

I would really prefer Rebecca Ferguson over Alicia Vikander. She has the looks, the acting experience, and I imagine someone like Ingrid would bring the better out in Rebecca than in Alicia.

Jessica Chastain To Play Ingrid Bergman In Tale Of Torrid Affair With Robert Capa – Cannes

EXCLUSIVE: Two-time Academy Award nominee and Cannes jury member Jessica Chastain will star in Seducing Ingrid Bergman, and she and her Freckle Films has joined YRF Entertainment to produce it. Arash Amel wrote the script and is also producing. It’s based on the 2012 novel by Chris Greenhalgh which tells the story of the torrid romance between the Casablanca actress and celebrated war photographer Robert Capa. Their relationship began in Paris immediately following WWII, and moved to Hollywood at the time of the McCarthy Communist witch hunts.

YRF Entertainment will finance, and its production president Jonathan Reiman will be exec producer. Freckle Films’ president of production and development Kelly Carmichael will oversee it. No director has yet been set.

“We are thrilled to be working with YRF and Arash Amel on Seducing Ingrid Bergman. This is a captivating story about a deeply moving romance between two remarkable people,” said Freckle Films’ founder-president Chastain and Carmichael.

YRF chief executive officer Uday Chopra called Chastain “the perfect actress to star in Seducing Ingrid Bergman. Jessica is no stranger to portraying strong, intelligent women and this role deserves an actress of her immeasurable talent. We also feel that she will bring a unique perspective as a producer.”

Chastain, who will next be seen starring in the Aaron Sorkin-directed Molly’s Game, is repped by CAA, Mosaic and Hansen, Jacobson. Amel is repped by CAA, Grandview and Myman, Greenspan. CAA is repping the film.

I like Chastain, but wow, this is bad casting. Doesn't have the right look, and she's terrible and inconsistent at accents. I was embarrassed for her at times during Zookeepers Wife.

The problem is, no one can play Bergman. She was a one of a kind. This whole project is silly and completely unnecessary.

Since Chastain is producing she'll definitely be going after any female director she can get.
