Default Churchill (Brian Cox) ~ June 16th

Quote:
Kicking off in June 1944, Churchill finds the Allied forces perched on the brink as a million soldiers are secretly assembled on the south coast of England, poised to invade Europe and wrest it from the grip of the Nazi war machine. But one other thing stands in their way: Winston Churchill, who fears repeating the fallout of his disastrous previous command on the beaches of Gallipoli in 1915.

Exhausted by years of conflict and plagued by doubt and depression, Churchill is a shadow of the heroic man who helped his country resist the Blitz. He'll need the support of his unflappable wife Clementine (Miranda Richardson) to find the strength to support the battle plan. Will he do it? Well, er, spoiler alert: history, though as ever with this sort of thing, it's the journey and the emotional underpinnings that are more important than the outcome we know.

With John Slattery, James Purefoy and Ella Purnell also in the cast, Churchill will fight them on the beaches from 2 June in the States and 16 June in the UK.

I'd watch this for the cast alone. Looks good!

Looks alright. Though I'm sure it'll get buried beneath Joe Wright's competing film, Darkest Hour, as that is slated for award season and has the more stacked cast.

I love both actors (Cox and Oldman) so I'll definitely be watching both versions.

I'm not so sure about that. Though Darkest Hour has a bigger distributor behind it (Cohen is releasing this one), Joe Wright's last film was the disastrous Pan and Oldman's kind of been blacklisted ever since he made those anti-Semitic comments in that interview a few years back. This one won't be a big hit but it already has an intriguing choice of lead and the director did the underappreciated The Railway Man.

Also, I think a Churchill film would have a difficult go in the US unless it was one focused on his time in Independence (I could see HBO doing a film on his later years and winning a few Emmys on it).

This was pretty good. Just got the blu from the library and found it to be an easy watch.
Brian Cox was fantastic in the role and the main reason to check this one out . I guess the Gary Oldman Churchill film coming later this year will get the awards recognition but Cox is no less an actor than Oldman and he too deserves some recognition.
