I want to get an HD-DVD player... as a collectors item in 20 years it'll be worth money as I'll leave it unopened, and those that chose to invest in HD-DVD will want to replace thier dead or dying HD-DVD player... just like betamax people are today...

This is one of those odd statements I see all the time. It's not only odd, it is utterly absurd. How do Toshiba and Sony survive? By making money. How do they make money? By having a happy customer base. How do they get a happy customer base? By making and selling products that people are willing to buy. More specifically, by making products that people are willing to pay more for than it costs to produce them (also allowing for loss-leaders like the PS3).

So, yes, Sony and Toshiba cares a lot about us. They care about very little else. Obviously they care about how to get our money, not about our health and wellbeing, but given the fact that there is a direct link between my happiness and my willingness to spend money on Sony, Toshiba or any other electronic entertainment products, they actually do care about that too. Indirectly.

I work for a big company. Believe me, we really do care about our customers. We are acutely aware that when our customers are unhappy our stock prize sags, and when the stock prize goes down someone gets fired. Even the CEO.
