Playing a big role in much of today's theatrical 3D, these conversion studios have created some impressive 3D conversions over the years. ![]() While it's difficult to simulate the natural stereo 3-D beauty of strong native/filmed 3D, it's wise to consider the importance of 3D conversion studios in keeping 3D alive and well with a large library of 3D titles since 2009's Avatar's resurgence of the stereo 3D market in theaters and at home. At the same time, the quality of the 3D results makes a difference in how audiences respond to 3D. A strong 3D film tends to get more praise for the 3D effects ![]() ![]() The 3D results may vary in the 3D conversion work, with some films being great examples of stereo 3D with strong 3D much of the way, while other films offering milder and disappointing 3D conversions (closer to 2D), likely dependent on the film's budget that the conversion team had to work with, as well as the team's software and skill levels. For a stronger 3D conversion, it costs more to offer greater separation of the 3D layers and volume of the objects/characters, requiring more empty space to be filled in carefully from the larger shift, compared to a mild 3D film which only requires a tiny shift from the dual images, one original 2D file duplicated, then the other duplicated film adjusted and offset frame by frame, so when they're combined and edited, a stereo 3D effect is the result. The good news is, 3D conversion software advances have greatly contributed to the improvement of 2D to 3D conversions since the early days of 2009, allowing for much finer details to be given the 3D effect, including separation of softer edges, fine strands of hair, and incredibly complex layers of particles such as rain or debris, as well as better volume of faces and more. Prime Focus provides a great example of what it takes to create the detailed 3D conversion work; in this page's video. http://www.primefocusworld.com/depth-gen/ Here's some additional information about the process of conversion of 2D to 3D. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2D_to_3D_conversion Prime Focus Stereo 3D work on World War Z 3D http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1422047/?ref_=fn_al_nm_3 Corey Turner, as mentioned later in the video above, is an executive Stereographer with a solid track of 3D for Prime Focus: Next up are the lists of the Conversion Studios 3D conversion film projects so far (Note that these films listed here were found directly from their official websites). For the most recent releases of each team's 3D conversions, visit their website. Also remembering that some films a studio contributes conversion work to, are sometimes among other studios' contributions to the same film, and in some cases, additional 3D conversion shots are created for films that offer mostly filmed 3D. Stereo D was also the conversion provider for The Last Airbender, but they've removed mentions of it from their website. I can see why since most of the movie was actually still in 2D and just pushed back into the screen.

Next up for Prime Focus are:
Pacific Rim 2 3D (2018) King Arthur: Legend of the Sword 3D 2017 Transformers: The Last Knight 3D Next up for Stereo D is: Star Wars VIII: The Last Jedi 3D 2017 I didn't see any other future projects listed yet, but I bet their plate is full for 2017. I'm wondering what teams are working on Guardians of the Galaxy 2 3D, and quite a few more to be revealed throughout 2017. I can imagine they don't announce too much until the film is released. Not sure what teams are attached to the following 3D conversions planned for 2017: May Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales 3D Walt Disney Pictures JUNE 2017 Wonder Woman 3D Warner Bros. / DC Entertainment EDIT: The Mummy 3D (confirmed through Universal Pictures main site finally, thanks to Rickstar for finding the poster) JULY 2017 Spider-Man: Homecoming 3D Marvel Studios / Columbia Pictures War for the Planet of the Apes 3D 20th Century Fox Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets 3D EuropaCorp AUG 2017 SEP 2017 OCT 2017 Blade Runner 2049 3D Warner Bros. Geostorm 3D NOV 2017 Thor: Ragnarok 3D Marvel Studios Justice League 3D Warner Bros. / DC Entertainment DEC 2017 Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle 3D Columbia Pictures Quote:
Prime Focus, Stereo D and Legend 3D offer the most recent big movie conversions. I see Venture 3D hasn't converted any big releases in awhile though their site shows they're still active as of 2017 working on other projects most likely. Thanks UFAlien. I added it in there. Never got to see that one in theaters, plus the blu ray 3D disc was pretty rare for awhile and high priced too. Thanks for the details on the 3D. Last edited by Zivouhr; 04-07-2017 at 07:21 PM. |

You know, I've always fancied stereo D as the top dog with the best conversions, but now that you have stacked it up like this....legend looks like it has titles I consider to be far superior 3D usage all around.
Looking forward to more from Legend Co ![]() edit: but wait, some of these companies worked in tandem on some of the titles so that makes it a bit more confusing. |

Keep in mind that Hugo was mostly native with only a few minutes of old footage converted. Putting that in their list makes it look like they have a very strong movie in their lineup when their contribution was little. And the doubles also confuses things.

Thanks UFAlien, Geostorm 3D conversion for October 20, 2017.

Yes, multiple companies may often contribute their 3D conversion work to a single film, which seems to becoming less common these days. One explanation for it would be if there was a tight deadline and the film had to be converted very quickly on a short notice for some reason. If one team wasn't large enough to handle it, other teams would be added. Last edited by Zivouhr; 04-07-2017 at 09:36 PM. |

Great list to keep!
Although, there are some visual effects heavy movies have their vfx rendered in 3D natively. So the conversion house got a large portion of their work being done. |

The problem I have with most conversions is that they change the line of sight between foreground and background objects creating a Z axis of empty space between them. But they don't change the angle of view of those objects (most apparent in the foreground) giving those objects no Z axis. To me all I see is a bunch of moving flat cardboard objects floating in 3 dimensional space.
To check out the difference, freeze frame and look at the popout shotgun in converted "Terminator 2" (same viewpoint, different placement), and then do the same freeze frame of the popout shotgun in natively shot "Parasite" (different placement AND different point of view). I just watched Tomb Raider this evening. Having been overall disappointed with what looked to me like an extremely mild job for virtually the whole film, I was curious to see who'd been responsible. A company named Southbay - I don't recall having seen their name before. I assume it was a cheaper conversion than the megaebudget films get, so a smaller team than would usually be used, but even so, not a great conversion I thought.

Stereo D
https://www.sdfxstudios.com/ https://www.sdfxstudios.com/ Stereo D has changed their website and brand name from Stereo D to SDFX Studios, with a website under construction and the old link going to the new web address. Prime Focus, also known as DNeg now, is working on the conversion of The Little Mermaid. From what I saw of the 3D in the trailer, so far that looks like a strong 3D film if it's consistent with that first trailer. They recently converted Brahmastra, which had a good amount of strong 3D layering and pop outs and deserves a blu ray 3D. https://www.dneg.com/stereo/ Some smaller stereo 3D conversion studios didn't fare well in recent times. They contributed to some of the larger film 3D conversion over the years. They might still be around, but their main websites no longer exist or have moved without linking back to the original sites. Legend 3D's studio and website, gone. http://www.legend3d.com/ Server not found. Gener8 http://www.gener8.com/ Server not found. Venture 3D's website is now a placeholder for business. |
