Default DVD to PS3 Converter

Anyone use the following DVD to PS3 converter? MP4 converter

I am currently testing the free dowload. If looks promising, but I am unsure of the max bitrates. I wanted to get something similar to the 1080p trailers and at least the bitrates I would get from DishTV. Here is a description:

"DVD to PS3 Converter for Windows provides fast access to real HD (support 1080p, 720p and 480p high-definition) and easy-handled ripping and converting from DVD to PS3 video formats and PSP Video formats. From now on, feel the high-quality 1080p video on your PS3 video game systems.

In addition, DVD to PS3 Converter, as expected, can EXTRACT DVD into most audio formats MP3, AAC with high quality.

DVD to PS3 Converter is friendly accessible to excellent customized parameters setting and personalized size-adjustable outputs by choosing any preferred segment, subtitle, and audio track and so on.

If you need a really high-definition (1080p) and high quality supported, yet very efficient tool to convert DVD and play it on PS3, without spending hours on training, then DVD to PS3 Converter for Windows is all you need."

It also looks to keep the 5.1 and 6.1 channel audio. Just looking for impressions.

Am I missing something? Why do you need a converter when PS3 natively supports DVDs and has one of the best upscaling algorithms on top of that?

Because I have been playing with the 1080p trailers and if the conversion is similar to what is used for those then the picture quality will be better than the upconversion. I like what the PS3 does, but my Oppo was, and still is, better.

I am interested too - but mostly because I'd like to 'archive' my son's DVD's to the PS3 so he has those available from the video menu.

I tried handbrake, it has a PS3 setting - but the compression artifacts are terrible.

I am going to play with the test rip I did tonight and see how things play out. I was looking at doing that onto a really large external drive to access on the PS3 for later.

I will post results for anyone who cares.

My one test so far, playing it on my cpu, the lip synch is out using DVD to PS3 mpeg4 converter. I want to reserve final judgement for actual play on PS3.

Did you have problems getting handbrake to work. I have tried 2 movies and they are both giving me copyright issues. Do you have to have AnyDVD to get them to work?

I did one test using DVD to PS3 and it said, "File Unsupported" when I went to play it on my PS3 through TVersity. I tried Mpeg 4. It "sees" it, it just can't play it. I ripped a track from a David Gray DVD I own. I thought it might be cool to take tracks from my music concerts on DVD and make a "mix" video folder.

Oh well.

Here is what I have so far:

As Cymbol reported, the DVD to PS3 did not work very well. For 1, when I could get it to play, and I never did on the PS3, there were lipsync issues. On top of that, I wanted a better than 3mbps picture for 1080p. So that looks unfruitful.

For HAndBrake. Got it to work just fine. Even got some frame speeds of around 25mbps. Question is: Is the output 1080p? I did not see that it was and the picture on the PS3, though nice, looked like a badly upconverted 480p signal.

Question still remains....What is the best way to do this. Anyone found a good program, that is not $5000, that converts DVD to upconverted 1080p video?

I don't want to sound too cynical, but I think what you are looking for is impossible. You can't take an original product and make it look better than what it was...a DVD file, used as the 'negative' in this process, is only as good as it was programmed to be. How can you turn it into something more than it originally was?

This has always been why I'm skeptical of the whole 'upconversion' movement and have never seen too much difference in any DVD I've played on the PS3 that is being upconverted.

I was looking for something similar to the encoding process for current BD and HD DVD that I could use to convert movies that are not blu or will not be blu. I know that is high standards, but a guys gotta try....and with all the people out there with expertise and drive to make it happen, it was worth a shot. Even if the picture quality, contrast, and crispness were there, you definitely do not get the range of color you would from BD. We have become spoiled.

My Oppo did wonderful things, but the biggest issue with upconversion is...well there are 2, as you stated, original source, and output location. Some upconverting players output better to a CRT than a LCD, or DLP.

Thanks for everyone's input. I hope something comes along to brighten our days.

For me, all I want is to copy some of my sons DVD's to the PS3.

handbrake just adds a lot of compression artifacts that make it tough to watch. I don't care if it upscales - but huge blocky chunks all over are a no go.

jd13 - if you upgrade to the latest version of dvd43 - google it or PM me - not sure if I can post the link here, you should be good with Handbrake. I've had a few that didn't work until the upgrade.

It does work great for my iPod when I travel.
